Like many Catholic universities in the United States, Seton Hall arose out of the Plenary Council of American Bishops, held in Baltimore, Maryland in 1844, with the goal of bringing Catholicism to higher education in order to help propagate the faith.

While the civil power in the East controlled the church and the bishop of Constantinople, the capital, wielded much power, in the West the Bishops of Rome were able to consolidate the influence and power they already possessed.

On 4 July 1415 the Bull of Gregory XII which appointed Malatesta and Cardinal Dominici of Ragusa as his proxies at the council was formally read before the assembled Bishops.
