In September 2008, American composer Michael John LaChiusa was quoted in Opera News Online, as working on an adaptation of Bizet's Carmen with McDonald in mind.

She went on to appear as Maddalena in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto with Jan Peerce, the Marquise of Berkenfeld in Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment with Lily Pons, Mallika in Léo Delibes's Lakmé, Feodor in Boris Godunov, Annina in Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, and the title role in Bizet's Carmen.

Bizet's next major assignment came from Carvalho, now managing Paris's Vaudeville theatre, who wanted incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L ' Arlésienne.

When the work was performed at the Théâtre de l ' Athénée on 13 December 1867 it was a great success, and the Revue et Gazette Musicale's critic lavished particular praise on Bizet's act: " Nothing could be more stylish, smarter and, at the same time, more distinguished ".

He made his opera début as the music teacher Don Basilio in Gioacchino Rossini ’ s Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Paris Opera in 1961, and remained in the company until 1965, when he sang his first major role, Escamillo from Bizet's Carmen.

However, his profile with the company was considerably raised when he gave a much lauded portrayal of Escamillo in Georges Bizet's Carmen in 1961 ; a role he performed with the company again in 1964.

Her early parts with the company were from the lyric soprano repertoire, such as Nedda, Countess Almaviva in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust, Micaela in Bizet's Carmen, and the three heroines in Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann.

Interestingly Delaborde, who was a passionate athlete, may have been indirectly responsible for Bizet's death, which followed a swimming competition between the two, as a result of which Bizet caught a chill.

In the summer of 2002, BLO produced " Carmen on the Common ", a community-outreach initiative of a summer-long education series which culminated in two free, fully staged outdoor performances of Bizet's Carmen on Boston Common.

He also arranged twelve numbers from Bizet's opera Carmen into two Carmen Suites.

Its press reception was more favourable than that for any of Bizet's other operas ; Le Ménestral's critic hailed the second act as " a masterpiece from beginning to end ".

Mezzo-sopranos typically sing secondary roles in operas ; notable exceptions include the title role in Bizet's Carmen, Angelina ( Cinderella ) in Rossini's La Cenerentola, and Rosina in Rossini's Barber of Seville ( all of which are also sung by sopranos ).

Somehow, they still managed to make 12 films during this period, the best-known being Carmen ( 1933 ) and Papageno ( 1935 ), both based on popular operas ( Bizet's Carmen and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte ).

It also hosted the Ballet of her Majesty's Theatre in the mid-19th century, before returning to hosting the London premières of such famous operas as Bizet's Carmen and Wagner's Ring Cycle.
