Plant stated that Bonham's drumming is the key to the song: " It was what he didn't do that made it work ".

Bonham's drumming was improvised in the studio.

Scholars have occasionally interpreted Lord Coke's ruling in Dr. Bonham's Case as implying the possibility of judicial review, but by the 1870s, Lord Campbell was dismissing judicial review as " a foolish doctrine alleged to have been laid down extra-judicially in Dr. Bonham's Case ..., a conundrum ought to have been laughed at.

By far Bonham's most famous resident was " Mr. Sam ," Sam Rayburn, the longtime Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

In America, Coke's decision in Dr. Bonham's Case was used to justify the voiding of the Stamp Act 1765 and writs of assistance, which led to the American War of Independence, and after the establishment of the United States his decisions and writings profoundly influenced the Third and Fourth amendments to the United States Constitution while necessitating the Sixteenth.

Coke was proud of Cambridge and the time he spent there, later saying in Dr. Bonham's Case that Cambridge and Oxford were " the eyes and soul of the realm, from whence religion, the humanities, and learning were richly diffused into all parts of the realm.

Thomas Bonham v College of Physicians, commonly known as Dr. Bonham's Case was a decision of the Court of Common Pleas under Coke in which he ruled that " in many cases, the common law will controul Acts of Parliament, and sometimes adjudge them to be utterly void: for when an Act of Parliament is against common right and reason, or repugnant, or impossible to be performed, the common law will controul it, and adjudge such Act to be void ".

Whatever Coke's meaning, after an initial period of application, Bonham's Case was thrown aside in favour of the growing doctrine of Parliamentary sovereignty.

During the legal and public campaigns against the writs of assistance and Stamp Act 1765, Bonham's Case was given as a justification for nullifying the legislation, and Marbury v. Madison, the American case which forms the basis for the exercise of judicial review in the United States under Article III of the Constitution, uses the words " void " and " repugnant ", seen as a direct reference to Coke.

Academics have argued that Coke's work in Bonham's Case forms the basis of judicial review and the declaration of legislation as unconstitutional in the United States ; another calls this " one of the most enduring myths of American constitutional law and theory, to say nothing of history ", pointing out that at no point during the Constitutional Convention was Bonham's Case referenced.

During the legal and public campaigns against the writs of assistance and Stamp Act 1765, Bonham's Case was given as a justification for nullifying the legislation, and in the income tax case of 1895, Joseph Hodges Choate used Coke's argument that a tax upon the income of property is a tax on the property itself to have the Supreme Court of the United States declare the Wilson – Gorman Tariff Act unconstitutional, leading to the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment.

John Bonham's body was cremated and his ashes were interred on 12 October 1980, at Rushock Parish Church, Worcestershire.

Bonham's drum solo was often played at Led Zeppelin concerts from the first North American tour in November 1968, being his solo performance showcase on concert tours through 1977.

During their early 1968-1969 tours it was known as " Pat's Delight " ( a reference to Bonham's wife ), from 1969-1975 it was " Moby Dick ", and during Led Zeppelin's 1977 North American Tour it was " Over the Top " as the solo began with the opening riff to " Out on the Tiles " before segueing into a lengthy drum solo ( in the same time ending with a " Moby Dick " riff ).

This recording was done using John Bonham's Ludwig Speed King model # 201, the pedal he used for his entire career and which was known as the " Squeak King " because of the excessive squeaking that can be heard on some recordings, especially on this track.

In 1830, Bonham practiced law in Pendleton, but was found in contempt of court after caning an attorney who had insulted one of Bonham's clients.

In 2007, 27 years after the group disbanded, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited ( along with John Bonham's son, Jason ) for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London.

The three members reunited again on 14 May 1988, for the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, with Bonham's son, Jason Bonham, on drums.

Only Page and bassist John Paul Jones play the tune's Drop-D blues-based riff with Bonham's drums — as a power trio — at the very beginning and the very end of the tune, leaving the remainder open for Bonham alone.

Meanwhile, on 12 March 2008, an auction record for a painting by Bryan Pearce was set at Bonham's New Bond Street auction rooms in London when the work " St Ives Harbour 1 " ( 1965 ), 20 " x 46 ", realised a hammer price of £ 28, 000 ( with commission around £ 33, 500 ).

Bonham's Case met a mixed reaction at the time, with King James I and the Lord Chancellor, Lord Ellesmere, both deeply unhappy with it ; it has been suggested as one of the reasons for Coke's dismissal from the Common Pleas in 1613.

The case's modern irrelevance is such that Philip Hamburger, writing in 2008, notes that " Bonham's Case scarcely deserves mention in a history of judicial duty, except for reasons that are now largely forgotten ".

Bonham's drums featured a phasing effect ( giving the bass drum its heavy, thundering " thump " sound ) courtesy of an early Eventide phaser supplied by engineer Ron Nevison.

Live versions of " Moby Dick " are included on the live album How the West Was Won ( lasting 19: 20, performed at Long Beach Arena in 1972 ), and on Led Zeppelin's 1976 concert film, The Song Remains the Same as part of Bonham's fantasy sequence.

Following Bonham's death, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin performed " Heartbreaker " at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert in 1988, at Madison Square Garden in New York, with John's son Jason Bonham on drums.

James Kent, in his Commentaries on American Law, argued that Bonham's Case and cases like it only meant that statutes should be given a " reasonable construction ".

Outside of the judiciary, John Lilburne used Bonham's Case in his book The Legall Fundamentall Liberties of the People of England, and later in his 1649 treason trial, to justify his attack on the Rump Parliament.

In fact, Page once admitted to letting Bonham use a double bass drum in an early demo of " Communication Breakdown " but claimed he scratched the track because of Bonham's " over-use " of it.

When played live, Bonham's drum solo would last as little as 6 minutes or, more frequently, as long as 30 minutes, while the rest of the band would leave the stage after having played the introduction.

Many examples are familiar in everyday speech even today, " One cannot be a judge in one's own cause " ( see Dr. Bonham's Case ), rights are reciprocal to obligations, and the like.

Led Zeppelin disbanded following Bonham's unexpected death in 1980.

An autopsy found no other drugs in Bonham's body.

The King of Sweden presented the prize to Plant, Page, and Jones, along with John Bonham's daughter, in Stockholm in May 2006.

The U. S. Supreme Court stated Bonham's Case did not set a precedent in the United States to make common law supreme over statutory law:

As Chief Justice, Coke restricted the use of the ex officio oath and, in the Case of Proclamations and Dr. Bonham's Case, declared the King to be subject to the law, and the laws of Parliament to be void if in violation of " common right and reason ".
