Broadway then runs past the proposed uptown campus of Columbia University, and the main campus of CUNY — City College ; the beautiful Gothic buildings of the original City College campus are out of sight, a block to the east.

The IRT 42nd Street Shuttle runs under 42nd Street between Broadway / Seventh Avenue ( Times Square ) and Park Avenue ( Grand Central ); the IRT Flushing Line begins at 41st Street / Seventh Avenue, runs between 41st and 42nd from Sixth Avenue to Park Avenue, curves onto 42nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues, and continues under the East River to Queens.

A portion of the IND Sixth Avenue Line runs under Houston Street, between Sixth Avenue to just before Avenue A ; there are stations at Second Avenue ( train ) and Broadway – Lafayette Street ( trains ).

A number of Off-Broadway musicals have had subsequent runs on Broadway.
