The Bryozoa, also known as Ectoprocta or commonly as moss animals, are a phylum of aquatic invertebrate animals.

In the oceans the most important marine invertebrate groups are the Foraminifera, corals, Bryozoa, Ostracoda, brachiopods, ammonoids, hederelloids, microconchids and echinoderms ( especially crinoids ).

Cheilostomata, an order of Bryozoa in the class Gymnolaemata, are exclusively marine, colonial invertebrate animals.

Bryozoa ( moss animals ) are tiny creatures with a ring of tentacles surrounding the mouth.

Invertebrate sea life includes Cnidaria such as jellyfish and sea anemones ; Ctenophora ; sea worms including the phyla Platyhelminthes, Nemertea, Annelida, Sipuncula, Echiura, Chaetognatha, and Phoronida ; Mollusca including shellfish, squid, octopus ; Arthropoda including Chelicerata and Crustacea ; Porifera ; Bryozoa ; Echinodermata including starfish ; and Urochordata including sea squirts or tunicates.

In the Bryozoa it is outside the ring of the lophophore ; in the Entoprocta the anus is within the ring of the lophophore.

Many other taxa ( Cladocera, Bryozoa, Hydra, Copepoda and so on ) can disperse as dormant eggs or embryos.

Broward County is composed of Oolite limestone while western Broward is composed mostly of Bryozoa.

Gymnolaemata is a class of the phylum Bryozoa.

The lophophore () is a characteristic feeding organ possessed by four major groups of animals: the Brachiopoda, Bryozoa, Entoprocta, and Phoronida.

The phylum was originally called " Polyzoa ", but this term was superseded by " Bryozoa " in 1831.

Another group of animals discovered subsequently, whose filtering mechanism looked similar, was also included in " Bryozoa " until 1869, when the two groups were noted to be very different internally.

However, " Bryozoa " has remained the more widely used term for the latter group.

Other phyla include Acoelomorpha, Brachiopoda, Bryozoa, Entoprocta, Phoronida, and Xenoturbellida.

The superficially similar Bryozoa ( Ectoprocta ) have the anus outside a " crown " of hollow tentacles.

Other groups, such as the Bryozoa have been important interstitial organisms, living between the framework builders.

The Lophophorata include the Bryozoa, Entoprocta, Phoronida, and Brachiopoda.
