It was at this point that General Sir Redvers Henry Buller, a much respected commander, arrived in South Africa with major British reinforcements ( including an army corps of three divisions ).

However, the nadir of Black Week was the Battle of Colenso on 15 December where 21, 000 British troops commanded by Buller himself, attempted to cross the Tugela River to relieve Ladysmith where 8, 000 Transvaal Boers, under the command of Louis Botha, were awaiting them.

Buller attacked Louis Botha again on 5 February at Vaal Krantz and was again defeated.

Buller withdrew early when it appeared that the British would be isolated in an exposed bridgehead across the Tugela, and was nicknamed " Sir Reverse " by some of his officers.

Like Buller, Roberts first intended to attack directly along the Cape Town – Pretoria railway but, again like Buller, was forced to relieve the beleaguered garrisons.

The first ski lift went into service at Mount Buller in 1949, and in the same year rope tow was installed at Falls Creek.

Since Durham was ill for much of his time in Canada a great deal of the credit for the success of his mission belongs to his advisers, Wakefield and Charles Buller.

Although their names are not mentioned it seems likely that report was written in cooperation by the three men, Durham, Buller and Wakefield.

Charles Buller ( 6 August 1806 – 29 November 1848 ), was a British barrister, politician and reformer.

Born in Calcutta, British India, Buller was the son of Charles Buller ( 1774 – 1848 ), a member of a well-known Cornish family, and Barbara Isabella Kirkpatrick, daughter of General William Kirkpatrick, considered an exceptionally talented woman.

For a long time it was believed that Buller wrote Lord Durham's famous Report on the Affairs of British North America.

Nevertheless it is quite possible that the Report was largely drafted by Buller, and it almost certainly bears traces of his influence.

Buller was briefly Secretary to the Board of Control under Lord Melbourne during 1841.

There are also many unincorporated areas that add to the interest and economic structure of the parish including Barnsdall, Buller, China, Coverdale, Edna, Foremans Hall, Hathaway, Illinois Plant, Lacassine, Lauderdale, Panchoville, Pine Island, Raymond, Roanoke, Silverwood, Thornwell, Topsy, Verret, and Woodlawn.

He also collaborated with Dave Bessell, Gary Stout and Ed Buller to create Node ; an analogue synth heavy project that produced a single album, Node.

Buller records that also in 1883, a party of 11 Māori obtained 646 Huia skins from the forest between the Manawatu Gorge and Akitio.

Here he was elected a fellow, and also served as a tutor to the son of Sir Francis Buller, which first made him consider becoming a barrister.

However, Buller has also stated that even if massive modularity is false this does not necessarily have broad implications for evolutionary psychology.

As a descendant of Sir Francis Buller, 2nd Baronet, of Churston Court, he is also in remainder to the baronetcy of Churston Court, a title held by his kinsman the Baron Churston.

The area round Mansfield named as Banbury was also the location of the novel The Far Country by Nevil Shute which featured logging on Mount Buller and previous forest fires, which having swept through Howqua obliterated almost all traces of a former settlement.

Murchison was the epicentre of the 1929 Murchison earthquake ( also known as the Buller earthquake ).

Rafting and Jet Boating in the Buller Gorge are also popular.

Over the next few weeks, Buller received further reinforcements, and also acquired sufficient carts and transport to operate away from the railway line which was his main supply line.

Winston Churchill was a journalist stationed in South Africa and he had also been commissioned as a Lieutenant in the South African Light Horse by General Buller after his well-publicised escape from Boer captivity.

In an interview to The Register newspaper of Adelaide, South Australia, dated 2 June 1917, Trooper George Ashby of the Frontier Light Horse ( also referred to as " Pullein's Pets ") attached to the 24th Regiment gave an account of his rescue by Col. Buller:

Buller Camp, a British military camp, was also set up there until 1953 when it was cleared for the new housing estate.

The township also includes the smaller communities of Blairhampton, Brady Lake, Buller, Carnarvon, Deep Bay, Dutch Line, Gelert, Hindon Hill ( ghost town ), Howland, Ingoldsby, Irondale, Kilcoo Harbour, Lochlin, Lutterworth, Miners Bay, Moore Falls and Pine Springs.

Buller also prepared a report that made recommendations on further directions for education in the province.

Ward supported the colonisation aims and methods of Edward Gibbon Wakefield ; and was a committee member of the South Australian Association set up in 1834 by Wakefield, with Buller and Grote, and also William Clay, Rowland Hill, William Molesworth, Southwood Smith, Henry Warburton and William Wolryche-Whitmore.

The Dunottar Castle would also carry General Buller and 1, 500 soldiers to the Boer War in 1900.

The Buller River upstream from Murchison along with the Mangles River are popular for whitewater kayaking and recreational fishing.

While earlier in the Canadian Navy before founding the school, Buller competed as a popular boxer known as " Gentleman Jim ".

Primarily a resort town, Mount Buller is popular with snowsports enthusiasts in winter due to its close location to Melbourne.
