Ladies of Llangollen | Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby had a relationship that was hailed as devoted and virtuous, after eloping and living 51 years together in Wales.

Perhaps the most famous of these romantic friendships was between Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, nicknamed the Ladies of Llangollen.

Diarist Anne Lister, captivated by Butler and Ponsonby, recorded her affairs with women between 1817 and 1840.

Butler and Ponsonby lived together for the rest of their lives, over 50 years.

In April 2011, the same month in which the first Irish civil partnerships took place under the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010, Irish state broadcaster RTE broadcast a 45-minute radio documentary about the lives of Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby entitled " An Extraordinary Affair ".

On the outskirts of the town is Plas Newydd (" New Place " or " New Hall "), home of the Ladies of Llangollen, the honourable Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler.

Appointed the British governor of Quebec in 1778, Frederick Haldimand, while kept informed of Sullivan's invasion by Butler and Fort Niagara, did not supply sufficient troops for his Iroquois allies ' defense.

But that this was not entirely because of the expedition can be seen as John Butler wrote: " The Indians in this part of the Country are so ill off for Provisions that many have nothing to subsist upon but the roots and greens they gather in the woods " in May, 1778 – i. e., before the expedition.

In July 1778, Butler led his rangers and Iroquois allies at the Battle of Wyoming, in which he defeated Zebulon Butler and took Forty Fort.

The property was acquired by the businessman and landowner George Butler in 1778, and it is thought that he rebuilt and enlarged the house: in 1781 he paid the highest window tax in Downe.

In reprisal, Cornplanter and Joseph Brant participated in the 1778 Loyalist-Iroquois attacks led by Captain Walter Butler and Butler's Rangers in Cherry Valley, New York, later known by the Americans as the Cherry Valley Massacre.

Captain Walter Butler was in command of the Loyalist Raiding party that attacked Cherry Valley on November 11, 1778.

This was after Butler was concerned he was too reliant on prescribed pain relief medication which escalated when he was involved in a surfing incident before Christmas 2011.

After completing his sentence, Trumbo could not get work in California, so he sold his ranch and his family moved to Mexico City with Hugo Butler and his wife Jean Rouverol, who had also been blacklisted.

Ames is buried in the Hildreth family cemetery — the family of his mother-in-law, Sarah Hildreth Butler — behind the main cemetery ( also known as Hildreth Cemetery ) on Hildreth Street in Lowell.

For much of its history, the town has been influenced by the Butler family.
