Canal + brought a lawsuit against News Corporation alleging that they, with the help of NDS, had been working on breaking the MediaGuard smartcards used by Canal +, ITV Digital and other non-Murdoch-owned TV companies throughout Europe.

The TV distribution is branded Canal Digital.

Channel is broadcast by Canal Digital in satellite, terrestrially by DNA widely in southern Finland but also in other parts of the country.

In addition the free-to-air broadcasts, two companies are providing encryption cards for pay television: Canal Digital and PlusTV.

Canal Digital was the first to launch, originally only offering four Canal + channels ( the Disney Channel was added later on ).

Both packages got more channels with the launch of MUX E in September 2007: SVT Europa and MTV3 Fakta was added to PlusTV and KinoTV was added to Canal Digital, while Discovery Channel, Eurosport, MTV Finland and Nickelodeon were added to both packages.

After that service merged with Canal Digital which started late 1997.

Canal Digital launched some HDTV channels, like Discovery HD, on their digital paytv-package during 2006.

It was also launched, ( February 3, 2009 ) in Norway for Canal Digital.

The company has now been merged with Telenor's cable and satellite television subsidiary Canal Digital.

However, in April 2005, TV4 Plus, TV4 Film and TV400 were launched on Viasat ( the TV4 Group channel had to wait until 2006 due to contracts with the Canal Digital platform ).

As of 2005, TV4 is transmitted free-to-air on the digital terrestrial network while TV4 Plus, TV4 Film, TV400 and TV4 Fakta require subscription from Boxer, Canal Digital or Viasat via satellite, or cable TV from several cable networks, including Tele2Vision, Com Hem and Canal Digital.

The main pay television distributors are: Com Hem ( cable ), Boxer ( terrestrial ), Viasat ( satellite ) and Canal Digital ( satellite ).

Viasat ’ s main competitor on Direct Broadcast Satellite distribution in the Nordic countries is Canal Digital.

Canal + then passed to form part only in Digital + on 7 November 2005.
