Caricature experienced its first successes in the closed aristocratic circles of France and Italy, where such portraits could be passed about for mutual enjoyment.
During the reign of Louis Philippe, Charles Philipon launched the comic journal, La Caricature, Daumier joined its staff, which included such powerful artists as Devéria, Raffet and Grandville, and started upon his pictorial campaign of satire, targeting the foibles of the bourgeoisie, the corruption of the law and the incompetence of a blundering government.
Bolstered by its popularity, he added to his fame by publishing a variety of short stories and essays in the magazines Revue de Paris, La Caricature, and La Mode.
The NCN officially changed its name to the International Society of Caricature Artists in 2009 to better reflect its international growth and presence.

Third and Estate
The deputies of the Third Estate representing the common people ( the two others were the Catholic Church and nobility ) decided to break away and form a National Assembly.
On 20 June the deputies of the Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath, swearing not to separate until a constitution had been established.
The King's acquiescence with the demands of the upper orders led to the deputies of the Third Estate renaming themselves as the National Assembly on June 17.
The first year of the Revolution saw members of the Third Estate proclaiming the Tennis Court Oath in June, the assault on the Bastille in July, the passage of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in August, and an epic march on Versailles that forced the royal court back to Paris in October.
Elections were held in the spring of 1789 ; suffrage requirements for the Third Estate were for French-born or naturalised males only, at least 25 years of age, who resided where the vote was to take place and who paid taxes.
Strong turnout produced 1, 201 delegates, including: " 291 nobles, 300 clergy, and 610 members of the Third Estate.

The Third Estate demanded that the verification of deputies ' credentials should be undertaken in common by all deputies, rather than each estate verifying the credentials of its own members internally ; negotiations with the other estates failed to achieve this.
On 10 June 1789, Abbé Sieyès moved that the Third Estate, now meeting as the Communes ( English: " Commons "), proceed with verification of its own powers and invite the other two estates to take part, but not to wait for them.
When the National Assembly was later created in June 1789 by the Third Estate, the clergy voted to join them, which perpetuated the destruction of the Estates General as a governing body.
While the Third Estate demanded and was granted " double representation " so as to balance the First and Second Estate, voting was to occur " by orders " – votes of the Third Estate were to be weighted – effectively canceling double representation.
This eventually led to the Third Estate breaking away from the Estates-General and, joined by members of the other estates, proclaiming the creation of the National Assembly, an assembly not of the Estates but of " the People.
After the king fired his finance minister, Jacques Necker, for giving his support and guidance to the Third Estate, worries surfaced that the legitimacy of the newly formed National Assembly might be threatened by royalists.
