Lee was born at Stratford Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of Major General Henry Lee III ( Light Horse Harry ) ( 1756 – 1818 ), Governor of Virginia, and his second wife, Anne Hill Carter ( 1773 – 1829 ).

Born near Lexington, Kentucky to Carter Henry Harrison II and Caroline Russell, he was only a few months old when his father died.

When William Henry Harrison sold this parcel to his brother Carter Bassett Harrison in the mid-1790s, the parcel was referred to as Brown's Quarter, which was the same name given to the parcel on which some of Sherwood Forest now lies.
