The original Berber name, Anfa ( meaning: " hill " in English ), was used by the locals, and Berber-speaking, city dwellers until the French occupation army entered the city in 1907 and adopted the Spanish name, Casablanca.

The area which is today Casablanca was settled by Berbers by at least the 7th century BC.

In his book “ Wasf Afriquia ”, Hassan Al Wazan refers to ancient Casablanca as " Anfa ", a great city which was founded by the Berber kingdom of Barghawata in 768 AD.

This effectively began the process of colonization, although French control of Casablanca was not formalised until 1910.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Casablanca was a major centre of anti-French rioting.

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city as well as its chief port.

Although no longer a member of the OAU ( Organisation of African Unity ) since November 12, 1984 — following the admission of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic as the government of Western Sahara — Morocco remains involved in developing the regional economy, as the city of Casablanca contains North Africa's busiest port and serves as the country's economic center.

The Americans surrounded the port of Casablanca by 10 November, and the city surrendered an hour before the final assault was due to take place.

Mohammedia (, Al-Muḥammadia, Berber: El Muḥemmadiya, Fḍala ) is a port city on the west coast of Morocco between Casablanca and Rabat in the region of Greater Casablanca.

In the meantime the murder of Europeans at Casablanca had led to the occupation of that port by France.

The Casablanca Mohammed V Airport was originally built by the United States in early 1943 during World War II as an auxiliary airfield for Casablanca's Anfa Airport and was named Berrechid Airfield.
