Castiglione and title
He became Duke of Castiglione on 19 March 1808, a hereditary victory title ( i. e. not in chief of an actual fief, but a hollow title ), in honour of the 1796 victory.
During the siege of Mantua in 1796, the Austrians under Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser were defeated here in the second Battle of Castiglione by the revolutionary French army under General Augereau, later Marshal of France, who in 1808 was created Duke of Castiglione by Emperor Napoleon I, a hereditary victory title ( so there never was an actual territorial duchy attached to it ) extinguished in 1915.
Outside Italy he often used the title Marchese di Castiglione ; in Italy he often used the title Conte di Mulazzo.

Castiglione and city
The area around Grosseto and the coast, with Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia and the small villages that lie in the plain between the city and the coast, represents the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

It was written by Baldassare Castiglione over the course of many years, beginning in 1508, and published in 1528 by the Aldine Press in Venice just before his death ; an English edition was published in 1561.
In Book I, the Count states that when the courtier speaks he must have a “ sonorous, clear, sweet and well sounding ” voice that is neither too effeminate nor too rough and be “ tempered by a calm face and with a play of the eyes that shall give an effect of grace .” ( Castiglione 1. 33 ) This grace, or grazia, becomes an important element in the courtier ’ s appearance to the audience.
" ( Castiglione 1. 26 ) The Count reasons that by obscuring his knowledge of letters, the courtier gives the appearance that his “ orations were composed very simply ” as if they sprang up from “ nature and truth than from study and art .” ( 1. 26 ).
They give a highly idealised depiction of the forms represented, and the compositions, though very carefully conceived in drawings, achieve " sprezzatura ", a term invented by his friend Castiglione, who defined it as " a certain nonchalance which conceals all artistry and makes whatever one says or does seem uncontrived and effortless ...".
There is no indication of an intimate dialogue between the woman and the observer as is the case in the Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione ( Louvre ) painted by Raphael about ten years later, and undoubtedly influenced by the work.

The monotype process was invented by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione ( 1609-64 ), an Italian painter and etcher who was also the first artist to produce brushed sketches intended as finished and final works of art ( rather than as studies for another work ).
Venice responded by sacking Castiglione delle Stiviere ( 1452 ) and hiring Ludovico's brother, Carlo.

Shortly after Castiglione, Bonaparte tersely summed up Augereau's military qualities: " Much character, courage, steadiness, activity ; is used to war, liked by the soldiers, lucky in his operations.
The designers of these structures built of stone were the Jesuits Giuseppe Castiglione and Michel Benoist, who were employed by the Qianlong emperor to satisfy his taste for exotic buildings and objects.

His skill as an artist was appreciated by the Emperor Qianlong and Castiglione spent many years in the court painting various subjects, including the portraits of the Emperor and Empress.
In 2005, Castiglione became the subject of the television series Palace Artist in China, played by famed Canadian-Chinese actor Dashan ( Mark Rowswell ), and broadcast by China Central Television ( CCTV ).

Baldassare Castiglione, author of Il Cortegiano (" The Courtier "), wrote in 1528: "... Another of the greatest painters in this world looks down on this art in which he is unequalled ..." while the biographer known as " Anonimo Gaddiano " wrote, c. 1540: " His genius was so rare and universal that it can be said that nature worked a miracle on his behalf ...".
Castiglione declined to imitate Boccaccio and write in Tuscan Italian, as was customary at the time ; instead he wrote in the Italian used in his native Lombardy ( he was born near Mantua ): as the Count says, “ certainly it would require a great deal of effort on my part if in these discussions of ours I wished to use those old Tuscan words which the Tuscans of today have discarded ; and what ’ s more I ’ m sure you would all laugh at me ” ( Courtier 70 ).
Nearby Castiglione delle Stiviere, where many of the wounded were taken after the battle, is the site of the museum of the International Red Cross, focusing on the events that led to the formation of that organization.
