The Institute is named after Cato's Letters, a series of British essays penned in the early 18th century by John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon expounding the political views of philosopher John Locke, that had a strong influence on the American Revolution's intellectual environment.

For example, John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon were inspired by the play to write a series of letters, Cato's Letters on individual rights, using the name " Cato ".

He was a hero of John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, " the best-read and most widely regarded pamphleteers of prerevolutionary times ," whose " Cato's Letters ( after which the modern libertarian think tank the Cato Institute is named )" adopted Sidney's argument that " free men always have the right to resist tyrannical government.

Cato's Letters were essays by British writers John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, first published from 1720 to 1723 under the pseudonym of Cato ( 95 – 46 BC ), the implacable foe of Julius Caesar and a famously stubborn champion of republican principles.

Renown historian Clinton Rossiter stated " no one can spend any time the newspapers, library inventories, and pamphlets of colonial America without realizing that Cato's Letters rather than John Locke's Civil Government was the most popular, quotable, esteemed source for political ideas in the colonial period.

Ayn Rand Institute board member John Allison spoke at the Cato Club 200 Retreat in September 2012, contributed " The Real Causes of the Financial Crisis " to Cato's Letter, and spoke at Cato's Monetary Conference in November, 2011.

A generation later their arguments immensely influenced the ideals of the American Revolution ; it is estimated that half the private libraries in the American colonies held bound volumes of Cato's Letters on their shelves.

The Jeffersonian philosophy that animates Cato's work has increasingly come to be called " libertarianism " or " market liberalism.

His parents died when he was young, and he was cared for by his maternal uncle Marcus Livius Drusus, who also looked after Quintus Servilius Caepio, Servilia Caepionis Maior, and Servilia Caepionis Minor from Livia's first marriage ( though Quintus Servilius Caepio was generally known to be Cato's full brother ), as well as Porcia ( Cato's full sister ), and Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus ( Livius ' adopted son ).
