The Cherokee (; ) are a Native American people historically settled in the Southeastern United States ( principally Georgia, the Carolinas, and East Tennessee ).

Many linguists believe the word ' Tahlequah ' ( Tah-le-quah ) and the word ' Teh-li-co ' are the same as ' di li gwa ,' the Cherokee word for grain or rice.

Scholars report the Cherokee word ' di li gwa ' describes a type of native grain with a red hue that grew in the flat open areas of east Tennessee.

( The system is not limited to alphabets in the strict technical sense ; languages that use a syllabary or abugida, for example Cherokee, can use the same ordering principle provided there is a set ordering for the symbols used.

There are five counties adjacent to Clay County ; Macon County to the northeast ; Rabun County to the southeast ; Towns County, Georgia, to the south ; Union County, Georgia to the southwest ; Cherokee County, to the north.

They rendezvoused with Cherokee tribe members along the Arkansas River in present-day Oklahoma and continued westward along the Santa Fe Trail.

Of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes, the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians ( UKB ) have headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

The term " medicine people " is commonly used in Native American communities, for example, when Arwen Nuttall ( Cherokee ) of the National Museum of the American Indian writes, " The knowledge possessed by medicine people is privileged, and it often remains in particular families.

Another theory is that " Cherokee " derives from a Lower Creek word, Ciló-kki, meaning someone who speaks another language.

One is that the Cherokee, an Iroquoian-speaking people, are relative latecomers to Southern Appalachia, who may have migrated in late prehistoric times from northern areas, the traditional territory of the later Haudenosaunee five nations and other Iroquoian-speaking peoples.

The other theory, which is disputed by academic specialists, is that the Cherokee had been in the Southeast for thousands of years.

This is supported by the Cherokee oral history tradition.

In contrast, a large portion of the settlers encroaching on their territories and against whom the Cherokee ( and other Indians ) took most of their actions were Scots-Irish, Irish from Ulster of Scottish descent, a group which also provided the backbone for the forces of the Revolution ( a famous example of a Scots-Irishman doing the reverse is Simon Girty ).

But, there is ample evidence that the Cherokee were adapting modern farming techniques.

Over 16, 000 Cherokee were forcibly relocated westward to Indian Territory in 1838 – 1839, a migration known as the Trail of Tears or in Cherokee or ( The Trail Where They Cried ), although it is described by another word ( The Removal ).
