Locke's father, also called John, was a country lawyer and clerk to the Justices of the Peace in Chew Magna, who had served as a captain of cavalry for the Parliamentarian forces during the early part of the English Civil War.

He owned large West Country estates at Tormarton in Gloucestershire and Chew Magna in Somerset, while his principal residence was at Sutton Court in Stowey.

Chew Magna is a village and civil parish within the Chew Valley in the Unitary Authority of Bath and North East Somerset, in the Ceremonial county of Somerset, England.

Just outside the village is Chew Magna Reservoir: this small Bristol Water supply reservoir intercepts the Winford Brook.

Chew Magna is the largest village in the district, and can trace its importance back to Saxon times.

More recently, since about 1600, the name has been Chew Magna because this has been the most important of the several villages along the banks of the River Chew.

On 10 – 11 July 1968 a storm brought heavy rainfall to the Chew valley and Dundry, with falling in 18 hours on Chew Stoke, double the area's average rainfall for the whole of July, and flooded 88 properties in Chew Magna with many being inundated with of water.

The Chew Magna telephone exchange was manually operated until the 1950s.

According to the 2001 Census the Chew Valley North Ward ( which includes Chew Magna and Chew Stoke ), had 2, 307 residents, living in 911 households, with an average age of 42. 3 years.

In June, Alfie Knopfler, owner of the Chat n ' Chew, a diner, is considering closing early, as it is near high school graduation, and he has no customers, when a customer enters and orders coffee.

He had a lifelong personal friendship with George Washington, who is said to have treated Chew ’ s children “ as if they were his own.

Throughout the Revolutionary War, George Washington facilitated the transfer of letters between Mr. and Mrs. Chew, during months when they were forced to live apart.

The Chew family ’ s house on Third Street was situated between Spruce and Walnut Streets, next door to the house of Philadelphia Mayor Samuel Powel and his wife, Elizabeth Willing Powel, who was one of George Washington ’ s closest confidantes.

Prior to the American Revolution, Chew was friends with both George Washington and John Adams, and was a strong advocate for the colonies.

John Eager Howard married Margaret (" Peggy ") Chew, daughter of the Pennsylvania justice Benjamin Chew.
