Chic's was formed by Nile Rodgers a self described " street hippie " from late 1960s New York and Martin Dow DJ at from Key West, Florida who pioneered the NYC sound across that state.

It was also the first real breakthrough for sampling, as the bassline of Chic's " Good Times " laid the foundation for the song.

In 1988, Sinéad O ' Connor's art-rock song " I Want Your ( Hands On Me )" was remixed to emphasize the urban appeal of the composition ( the original contains a tight, grinding bassline and a rhythm guitar not entirely unlike Chic's work ).

In late 1978, Debbie Harry suggested that Chic's Nile Rodgers join her and Chris Stein at a hip hop event, which at the time was a communal space taken over by teenagers with boombox stereos playing various pieces of music that performers would break dance to.
