This refrain would soon appear in a very important composition, " Chimes of Freedom ", and, as biographer Clinton Heylin writes, " with this sad refrain, Dylan would pass from topical troubadour to poet of the road.

It was during this trip that Dylan composed " Chimes of Freedom ", finishing it in time to premiere at a Denver concert on the 15th.

" Unashamedly apocalyptic ... the composition of ' Chimes of Freedom ' represented a leap in form that permitted even more intensely poetic songs to burst forth.

Four songs from Another Side of Bob Dylan were eventually recorded by The Byrds: " Chimes of Freedom ", " My Back Pages ", " Spanish Harlem Incident ", and " All I Really Want to Do ".

He was also still experimenting with the imagery found on ' Chimes of Freedom ' and ' Mr. Tambourine Man.

" Salon. com critic Bill Wyman would dismiss it as " a lesser, ' relationship ' album ", but conceded that " Chimes of Freedom " was a " lovely hymn to the ' countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an ' worse '.

" Chimes of Freedom " is a song written and performed by Bob Dylan and featured on his 1964 album Another Side of Bob Dylan ( see 1964 in music ), produced by Tom Wilson.

" Chimes of Freedom " was written shortly after the release of " The Times They Are a-Changin '" album in early 1964 during a road trip that Dylan took across America with musician Paul Clayton, journalist Pete Karman, and road manager Victor Maimudes.

" Chimes of Freedom " was an important part of Dylan's live concert repertoire throughout most of 1964, although by the latter part of that year he had ceased performing it and would not perform it again until 1987, when he revived the song for concerts with the Grateful Dead and with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

In Chimes of Freedom: The Politics of Bob Dylan's Art, author Mike Marqusee notes that the song marks a transition between Dylan's earlier protest song style ( a litany of the down-trodden and oppressed, in the second half of each verse ) and his later more free-flowing poetic style ( the fusion of images of lightning, storm and bells in the first half ).

After " Chimes of Freedom ", Dylan's protest songs no longer depicted social reality in the black and white terms he renounces in " My Back Pages " but rather use satirical surrealism to make their points.

Although Dylan has denied that this is the case, he did draft a number of poems in the fall of 1963 in the aftermath of Kennedy's death and one of those poems in particular, a short six line piece, appears to contain the genesis for " Chimes of Freedom ":

By the time Dylan wrote the first draft of " Chimes of Freedom " the following February, it contained many of the elements of this poem, except that the crippled ones and the blind were changed to " guardians and protectors of the mind.

As of 2009, Dylan continues to perform " Chimes of Freedom " in concert, although he did not play the song live during the 23 years between late 1964 and 1987.

The Byrds included a recording of " Chimes of Freedom " on their 1965 debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man.

The Byrds ' performance of " Chimes of Freedom " at Monterey can be seen in the 2002 The Complete Monterey Pop Festival DVD box set.

A modern example is the Westminster Chimes which can be heard in London on Big Ben

The clock has Westminster Chimes, which sound on the quarter hour, and can be heard from the Queen St Mall and, at times, in the surrounding suburbs.

In 1980, Andrews and Laff left the band ( subsequently forming the post-punk band, Empire ), to be replaced in Generation X by The Clash and Cowboys International's former drummer Terry Chimes, and former Chelsea guitarist James Stevenson.

The story, perhaps apocryphal, is that " Hamp ", a drummer at the time, was playing at the NBC Radio studios, where he discovered a vibraharp that was kept on hand to play the musical motif identifying the NBC network, the " NBC Chimes ".

He uses a similar device in his next two Christmas books, titling the four divisions of The Chimes, " quarters ", after the quarter-hour tolling of clock chimes, and naming the parts of The Cricket on the Hearth " chirps ".

In addition, the Bon Jovi song " Bells of Freedom ", from their Have a Nice Day album, is somewhat reminiscent of " Chimes of Freedom " in structure.

Neil Young's song " Flags of Freedom " from his Living with War album mentions Dylan by name and melodically recalls the tune and verse structure of " Chimes of Freedom ", though Young is listed as the song's only writer.

" It is subdivided into chapters called " Chirps ", similar to the " Quarters " of The Chimes or the " Staves " of A Christmas Carol.

) In the unbroadcast version of the episode " The Chimes of Big Ben ", Number Six constructs a device that allows him to work out the Village's location ; this scene was cut presumably to remove the reference to navigation by stars which would have allowed an estimation of the Village's region, at the least, thereby undermining the storyline of the episode ( if not a key element in the entire series ).

It appears that Number Two is continually being observed by hidden cameras, and indeed one of the Number Twos confides to Number Six in " The Chimes of Big Ben ", " I'm as much of a prisoner here as you are.

However, when the Number Two of " Chimes of Big Ben " returns in " Once Upon a Time ", it is made clear that it is against his will.

The book takes its title from the song " Chimes of Freedom ", which is a transitional work between Dylan's earlier ' protest ' style and his later more free-flowing obscure and poetic style.

The band, with Chimes on drums, recorded a demo of " London Boys " and " Too Much Junkie Business ", as an audition for EMI in December 1977, but bassist Billy Rath and second guitarist and vocalist Walter Lure returned to the States soon afterward, effectively halting the Heartbreakers.

In the UK, this album was followed up by Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2, which repeated the Blonde on Blonde songs from Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and also added " I Want You ", " Absolutely Sweet Marie ", " Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ", " Gates of Eden ", " Chimes of Freedom " and several others.
