With the exception of Morden and Clapham South, where more land was available, the new stations were built on confined corner sites at main road junctions in already developed areas.

The first and last new stations on the extension, Clapham South and Morden, include a parade of shops and were designed with structures capable of being built above ( like many of the earlier central London stations ).

Clapham South was extended upwards soon after its construction with a block of apartments ; Morden was extended upwards in the 1960s with a block of offices.

Abbeville or the Village is an affluent district within Clapham lying between Clapham Common South Side and Clarence Avenue and is synonymous with the Clapham Common Ward.

Some of South London's priciest residential streets can be found in Clapham, including The Chase, Macaulay Road, Orlando Road, Grafton Square, Elms Grove, Elms Road and Rodenhurst Road as well as the North, South and West sides of Clapham Common.

The ancient status of that military road is recorded on a Roman stone now placed by the entrance of Clapham Library in the Old Town, which was discovered during building operations at Clapham Common South Side in 1912.

Clapham Junction station opened on 2 March 1863, a joint venture of the L & SWR, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway ( LB & SCR ) and the West London Extension Railway ( WLER ) as an interchange station for their lines.

To the north, Kew Bridge railway station is about a 10-minute walk from the Main Gate entrance, with trains to Clapham Junction and Waterloo.

There is a low ridge from Messines Ridge 80m ( 264 feet ) at its highest point, running north-east past " Clapham Junction " at the west end of Gheluvelt plateau ( 2 1 / 2 miles from Ypres at and Gheluvelt ( above ) to Passchendaele, ( 5 1 / 2 miles from Ypres at ) declining from there to a plain further north.

Balham is situated between four south London commons: Clapham Common to the north, Wandsworth Common to the west, Tooting Graveney Common to the south, and the adjoining Tooting Bec Common to the east – the latter two historically distinct areas are referred to by both Wandsworth Council and some local people as Tooting Common.

The group's name originates from Clapham Common, an area south-west of London then surrounded by fashionable villas.

It has more platforms and a greater floor area than any other station in the UK ( but Clapham Junction, just under four miles ( 6 km ) down the line, has the largest number of trains ).

The railway station encouraged the government to site its buildings-the town hall, library, police station, court and post office in the area surrounding Clapham Junction ; the Arding and Hobbs department store, diagonally opposite the station, was the largest of its type at the time of its construction in 1885 ; and the area was served by a vast music hall-The Grand-opposite the station and nowadays serving as a nightclub and venue for smaller bands.

The northern part of Clapham North lying within the Larkhall Ward includes the architecturally significant Sibella conservation area which is generally considered more affluent, whilst the southern part lies within Ferndale ward and includes Landor, Ferndale and Bedford roads.

Three tube stations-Clapham North, Clapham Common and Clapham South-serve the area, in addition to the Victoria Line stations in nearby Stockwell and Brixton.

Today's Clapham is an area of varied housing from the large Queen Anne, Regency and Georgian era homes of the Old Town and Clapham Common to the grids of Victorian housing in the Abbeville area.

Many young university graduates and students also choose to live in the Clapham area, a tradition carried over from the days when some University of London halls of residence were situated there.

In the Stockwell area ( on Clapham Road ) there is also Stockwell Park High School, a secondary school, Lansdowne School and numerous primary schools.

It has also given its name to the Vauxhall Parliamentary Constituency, which also includes parts of Brixton and Clapham, and to the Vauxhall Motors car manufacturer, which originated in the area, as well as to the Russian word for a large railroad station ( see below ).

It was formed in 1965 from the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea and much of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth, but excluding Clapham and most of Streatham, both of which were transferred to the London Borough of Lambeth.

The 15 clubs entering the competition are all amateur and mainly from the London area: Barnes, Civil Service, Clapham Rovers, Crystal Palace ( 1861 ), Donnington School, Hampstead Heathens, Harrow Chequers, Hitchin, Maidenhead, Marlow, Reigate, Priory, Royal Engineers, Upton Park, The Wanderers and Queen's Park ( Glasgow ).

Although it is in Battersea, the area around the station is commonly identified as Clapham Junction.

British Transport Police maintain a neighbourhood policing presence at Clapham Junction, whereas the Metropolitan Police Service and in particular the part-Transport For London funded Safer Transport Command provide a proactive police presence in the area outside of the station.

Clapham Park is an area in the Borough of Lambeth in London, to the south of central Clapham and west of Brixton.
