New York culture bloomed in the first half of the 19th century: in 1809 Washington Irving wrote the satirical A History of New York under the pen name Diedrich Knickerbocker, and in 1819 he based Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in Hudson Valley towns ; Thomas Cole's Hudson River School established itself in the 1830s by showcasing dramatic landscapes of the Hudson Valley.
