The second of the so-called J-missions, the mission was crewed by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly.

On the surface, Young and Duke collected of lunar samples for return to Earth, while Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly orbited in the Command / Service Module above to perform observations.

There were concerns that the explosive mechanism designed to separate the docking ring from the Command Module would not create enough pressure to completely sever the ring.

In January 1972, three months before the planned April launch date, a fuel tank in the Command Module was accidentally damaged during a routine test.

Six minutes after the successful burn of the S-IVB, the Command / Service Module, containing the crew, separated from the rocket and traveled for before turning around and retrieving the Lunar Module from inside the expended rocket stage.

The crew entered the Lunar Module through the docking tunnel connecting it with the Command Module to inspect its systems, at which time they did not spot any major issues.

With the preparations finished, Young and Duke undocked in the LM Orion from Mattingly in the Command / Service Module Casper 96 hours, 13 minutes, 13 seconds into the mission.

Flight day seven was to be Young's and Duke's third and final day on the lunar surface, for they would return to orbit to rejoin Ken Mattingly in the Command / Service Module following the day's moonwalk.

During this time, Mattingly was preparing the Command / Service Module in anticipation Young's and Duke's return approximately six hours later.

Young and Duke, in the LM, successfully rendezvoused and re-docked with Ken Mattingly, who had remained in orbit to perform observations while his fellow crewmembers explored the surface, in the Command / Service Module.

At a distance of about from Earth, Ken Mattingly, the Command Module Pilot, performed a " deep-space " extra-vehicular activity, or spacewalk, during which he retrieved several film cassettes from the CSM's SIM bay.

Approximately ten minutes before reentry into Earth's atmosphere the cone-shaped Command Module capsule, containing the three crewmembers, separated from the expended Service Module, which would burn up during reentry.

After successful parachute deployment and less than fourteen minutes after reentry began, the Command Module splashed down in the Pacific Ocean southeast of Christmas Island 290 hours, 37 minutes, 6 seconds after liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center.

Worden was assisted by James Irwin, doing a standup EVA in the Command Module hatch.

In March 1970 he became the first of the scientist-astronauts to be assigned to space flight, joining Richard F. Gordon, Jr. ( Commander ) and Vance Brand ( Command Module Pilot ) on the Apollo 15 backup crew.

Grissom was backup command pilot for Gemini 6A when he shifted to the Apollo program and was assigned as Command Pilot of the first manned mission AS-204, with Senior Pilot Ed White and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee.

He was chosen as Pilot of Gemini 4, with Command Pilot James McDivitt.

White's next assignment after Gemini 4 was as the back-up for Gemini 7 Command Pilot Frank Borman.

By the usual procedure of crew rotation in the Gemini program, White would have been in line for a second flight as the Command Pilot of Gemini 10 in July 1966, which would have made him the first of his group to fly twice.

In March 1966 he was selected as Senior Pilot ( second seat ) for the first manned Apollo flight, designated AS-204, along with Command Pilot Virgil " Gus " Grissom, who had flown in space on the Mercury 4 Liberty Bell 7 mission and as commander of the Gemini 3 Molly Brown mission, and Pilot Roger Chaffee, who had yet to fly into space.

On 21 March 1966, he received his first spaceflight assignment as Pilot for the first manned Apollo flight, AS-204, along with Command Pilot Grissom and Senior Pilot White.

See served as backup pilot for Gemini 5 and was in line to fly as Prime Crew Pilot for Gemini 8 but was promoted to be the Command Pilot of Gemini 9.

Borman was selected by NASA for the second NASA astronaut group in 1962, and was chosen as the Command Pilot for Gemini 7.

The Command Module Pilot and navigator, Michael Collins, had to have back surgery and was replaced by his backup, James Lovell, reuniting Borman with his Gemini 7 crewmate.
