The Amiga is a family of personal computers marketed by Commodore in the 1980s and 1990s.

With hindsight, the machine lacked the RAM ( a typical program would need to fit in only around 20 kB once display memory is subtracted ) and processing power to take on the prevailing Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64.

The Commodore 1541 ( also known as the CBM 1541 and VIC-1541 ) is a floppy disk drive ( FDD ) which was made by Commodore International for the Commodore 64 ( C64 ), Commodore's home computer.

The Commodore 1581 is a 3½ inch double sided double density floppy disk drive made by Commodore Business Machines ( CBM ) primarily for its C64 and C128 home / personal computers.

Thanks to a well-designed set of chips designed by MOS Technology, the Commodore 64, ( also referred to as C64 ), possessed remarkable sound and graphics for its time and is often credited with starting the computer demo scene.

This " interpretation " is what Tramiel used to counter-sue, and sought damages and an injunction to bar Amiga ( and effectively Commodore ) from producing any resembling technology.

The Lt. Kernal hard disk subsystem for the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 models stored its DOS on the disk, as is the case with modern systems, and loaded the DOS into RAM at boot time.

With a storage capacity of 800 KB, the 1581 was the highest capacity serial bus drive ever made by Commodore ( the 1 MB SFD-1001 used the parallel IEEE-488 ), and the only 3½ " one.

Commodore obtained an infusion of cash from Gould, which Tramiel used beginning in 1976 to purchase several second-source chip suppliers, including MOS Technology, Inc., in order to assure his supply.

Seeing a chance to gain some leverage, Tramiel immediately used the contract to counter-sue Commodore through its new subsidiary, Amiga, on August 13.

The custom-designed and custom-built AGA chipset also cost Commodore considerably more than the commodity chips used in IBM PCs, further reducing Commodore's profit margins.

Although the 1570 was compatible with the Commodore 64, the C64 wasn't capable of taking advantage of the drive's higher-speed operation, and when used with the C64 it was little more than a pricier 1541.

The 1571 featured a " burst mode " when used in conjunction with the C128 ( although not when used with the Commodore 64 or VIC-20 ).

However, booting CP / M was only supported from disks in the standard Commodore GCR format ; the MFM formats could only be used once the system was running.

By reducing the number of tracks used ( and thus the capacity ), Commodore could further reduce cost-in contrast to the double-density drives used e. g. in IBM PCs of the day which saved 180 KB on one side ( by using a 40-track format ).

It was similar to the Apple Macintosh and its simple design allowed the ST to precede the Commodore Amiga's commercial release by almost two months .< ref name =" amigaos ">

Then, to match the look of the C64, CBM changed the drive's color to brown-beige and the name to Commodore 1541.

The operational headquarters, where research and development of new products occurred, retained the name Commodore Business Machines, Inc.

While the Quantum Link service ran on a Commodore 64, using only the Commodore's PETSCII text-graphics, the screen was visually divided into sections and OLMs would appear as a yellow bar saying " Message From :" and the name of the sender along with the message across the top of whatever the user was already doing, and presented a list of options for responding.

Tramiel wanted a military-style name for his company, but names like Admiral and General were already taken, so he settled on the Commodore name.
