A more obvious influence on the early Poirot stories is that of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jeremy Bentham, Florence Nightingale and even Queen Victoria are reputed to have stayed there, although there is no real evidence for this.

Conan the Barbarian ( also known as Conan the Cimmerian ) is a fictional sword and sorcery hero that originated in pulp fiction magazines and has since been adapted to books, comics, several films ( including Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer ), television programs ( cartoon and live-action ), video games, role-playing games and other media.

" People of the Dark " is a remembrance story of " past lives ", and in its first-person narrative the protagonist describes one of his previous incarnations: Conan, a black-haired barbarian hero who swears by a deity called Crom.

Conan is a Cimmerian.

Howard once describes him as having a hairy chest and, while comic book interpretations often portray Conan as wearing a loincloth or other minimalist clothing, Howard describes the character as wearing whatever garb is typical for the land and culture in which Conan finds himself.

In the tales no human is ever described as stronger than Conan, although several are mentioned as taller ( such as the strangler Baal-pteor ) or of larger bulk.

In a letter to P. Schuyler Miller and John D. Clark in 1936 only three months before Howard's death, Conan is described as standing and weighing when he takes part in an attack on Venarium at only 15 years old, though being far from fully grown.

Although Conan is muscular, Howard frequently compares his agility and way of moving to that of a panther ( see, for instance, " Jewels of Gwahlur ", " Beyond the Black River " or " Rogues in the House ").

In addition, Conan speaks many languages, including advanced reading and writing abilities: in certain stories, he is able to recognize, or even decipher, certain ancient or secret signs and writings ; for example, in " Jewels of Gwahlur " Howard states, " In his roaming about the world the giant adventurer had picked up a wide smattering of knowledge, particularly including the speaking and reading of many alien tongues.

In " A Witch Shall be Born ", Conan fights armed men until he is overwhelmed, captured, and crucified, and goes a night and a day without water, but still possesses the strength to pull the nails from his feet, then to hoist himself into a horse's saddle and ride ten miles.

Conan is a formidable armed and unarmed combatant.

With his back to the wall Conan is capable of engaging and killing opponents by the score.

Conan is far from untouchable and has been captured and defeated several times ( on one occasion knocking himself out drunkenly running into a wall ).

The Gnome edition also issued the first Conan story written by an author other than Howard — the final volume published, which is by Björn Nyberg and revised by de Camp.

* Joe Marek chronology — Joe Marek's chronology is limited to stories written ( or devised ) by Howard, though within that context it is essentially a revision of the Miller / Clark tradition to better reflect the internal evidence of the stories and avoid forcing Conan into what he perceives as a " mad dash " around the Hyborian world within timeframes too rapid to be credible.

Through marriage, Leary is a third cousin of talk show host Conan O ' Brien.

The Hyborian Era of Conan and Kull is considered part of Earth-616 pre-recorded history.

Ethnically the Cimmerians to which Conan belongs are descendants of the Atlanteans, though they do not remember their ancestry.

( Sherlock Holmes seems to be an actual example of a fictional character ; one might think there are many other characters Arthur Conan Doyle might have invented, though he actually invented Holmes.

Mako was also considered for the role of Mr. Miyagi, but was not available due to prior commitments to film Conan the Destroyer, though he would eventually play a similar role in the film Sidekicks.

Alongside the Dungeons & Dragons Greyhawk setting, Warhammer is among the oldest of commercial fantasy worlds, a direct descendant of both that game and Tolkien's Middle-earth, though the 1st edition cited Robert E Howard ( Conan the Barbarian ) alongside Michael Moorcock and Tolkien as influencing fantasy table-top games.

There were enough holes in eyewitness accounts to allow Conan Doyle to plausibly resurrect Holmes ; only the few free surviving members of Moriarty's organisation and Holmes ' brother Mycroft ( who appears briefly in this story ) know that Sherlock Holmes is still alive, having won the struggle at Reichenbach Falls and sent Moriarty to his death – though nearly meeting his own at the hands of Moriarty's henchmen.

Triumph appears in a prerecorded bit on O ' Brien's 2010 Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour mocking the town Conan is performing in, even though NBC supposedly retained Triumph's rights in the settlement that allowed O ' Brien to leave NBC.

Bill Maher can be seen in the audience of the first episode ( though he was not an official guest ), and Conan O ' Brien claims he hitchhiked to New York just to see a broadcast in Studio 6A ( which has also been home to some of Jack Paar's NBC programs, later Late Night with David Letterman and finally Late Night with Conan O ' Brien ).

There is some doubt about who wrote what — though at times Carr's highly recognisable style breaks through the convention of pastiching the original Conan Doyle stories.

He said his inappropriate comments on Late Night with Conan O ' Brien and The Hollywood Squares got him disinvited, though he later returned to O ' Brien's program.

Conan Meriadoc also appears in the prologue to the Latin Life of Saint Goeznovius, though the date of this text is disputed.

Both of these tie Conan and the founding of Brittany to the story of the Roman usurper Magnus Maximus, though in both cases this is heavily embellished.

Beginning in the mid 18th century Breton historians attempted to establish the historical existence of Conan, though he is now regarded as a mythical figure.

and his next feature, Arthur Conan Doyle ’ s The Adventures of Gerard ( 1970 ), Skolimowski contributed a story to a Czech-produced portmanteau film, Dialóg 20-40-60 ( 1968 ), in which three different directors ( with Zbyněk Brynych and Peter Solan ) each devised their own story using identical dialogue even though the central characters in each section are separated in age by twenty years.

Several other characters from outside the primary continuity have lifted the hammer, including: Conan the Barbarian ; Dargo Ktor ( Future Thor ); Loki ; Magni ; Rogue ( after absorbing the entirety of Thor's life force and thus essentially becoming Thor ); Miguel O ' Hara ( Spider-Man 2099 ); Woden ; Alex Power ; and the DC Comics characters Superman ( though he was unable to later that issue and Thor claimed Odin had briefly lifted the enchantment ) and Wonder Woman.

They are a special favorite race of Robert E. Howard and are mentioned frequently in his tales, having a continuity from the tales of King Kull of Atlantis, where they are his allies, to the Hyborian Age of Conan the Barbarian where they are the mortal enemies of the Cimmerians, who are actually descended from the old Atlanteans though they do not remember their ancestry or old alliance.

Other worshipers of Set emerged however, including the sorcerer Thoth-Amon, an enemy of Conan the Barbarian who at one point wielded the Cobra Crown a device similar to the Serpent Crown which also served as conduit for Set's power on Earth, though it was quickly destroyed.

Suggested starting points for the Bronze Age of comics include Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's Conan No. 1 ( October 1970 ), Denny O ' Neil and Neal Adams ' Green Lantern / Green Arrow No. 76 ( April 1970 ), or Stan Lee and Gil Kane's The Amazing Spider-Man No. 96 ( May 1971 ; the non-Comics Code issue ).

The first book, Conan of Cimmeria: Volume One ( 1932 – 1933 ) ( 2003 ; published in the US as The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian ) includes Howard's notes on his fictional setting, as well as letters and poems concerning the genesis of his ideas.

This was followed by Conan of Cimmeria: Volume Two ( 1934 ) ( 2004 ; published in the US as The Bloody Crown of Conan ) and Conan of Cimmeria: Volume Three ( 1935 – 1936 ) ( 2005 ; published in the US as The Conquering Sword of Conan ).

In 1090 he reportedly threw a treacherous burgher named Conan Pilatus from the tower of Rouen ; the tower was known from then on as " Conan's Leap.

Explicit details about Sherlock Holmes's life outside of the adventures recorded by Dr. Watson are few and far between in Conan Doyle's original stories ; nevertheless, incidental details about his early life and extended families portray a loose biographical picture of the detective.

Conan Doyle promptly submitted The Sign of the Four to Stoddart, but Wilde was more dilatory ; Conan Doyle's novel was published in the February 1890 edition of Lippincott's, but Stoddart did not receive Wilde's typescript for The Picture of Dorian Gray until 7 April 1890.

* In the Jeremy Brett – Edward Hardwicke The Return of Sherlock Holmes series episode " The Priory School ", mention is made that ancestors of the Duke of Holdernesse, apart from being cattle thieves, may have provided a member of the Hellfire Club ; however, no such reference is set forth in the original story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Finally, Conan Doyle is known to have used his former school, Stonyhurst College, as inspiration for details of the Holmes series ; among his contemporaries at the school were two boys named Moriarty.

In what Tom O ' Neil called a " jaw-dropper ", the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were the first since Late Show began in which the show was not nominated ; O ' Neil attributed the omission to the fact that The Tonight Show with Conan O ' Brien had received a nomination that year.

Following the end of the show's fourth season, most of the original staff members left the show ; only Bill Oakley, Josh Weinstein, Conan O ' Brien and Dan McGrath remained, and O ' Brien soon left to replace David Letterman as host of Late Night.
