* William Henry Coombes ( 1767 — 1850 ), Catholic theologian, was a priest in Shepton Mallet from 1810 to 1849, following which he retired to the nearby Downside Abbey.

One can loosely divide the group's history into two periods: the more horn-oriented earlier ensembles ( typically with some combination of Watts, saxophonist Evan Parker and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler ), and the later string-based ensembles with guitarist Roger Smith ( who became as central to the second edition of SME as Watts was to the first ) and violinist Nigel Coombes.

Personal and musical tensions existed within the group, whose main songwriter was Peet Coombes, and legal wranglings happened with the band's management, publishers and record labels.

I had worked with Roger with singer Paul Williams ( Juicy Lucy ) and Tommy previously and clearly we all enjoyed doing what we do best-playing freely ".

It was written by Andrew Denton, Simon Dodd, Bruce Griffiths, and George Dodd, directed by Martin Coombes and produced by Mark Fitzgerald.
