Today the most renowned figure of late 18th century opera is Mozart, who began with opera seria but is most famous for his Italian comic operas, especially The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, as well as The Magic Flute, a landmark in the German tradition.

Mozart, in many ways Gluck's successor, combined a superb sense of drama, harmony, melody, and counterpoint to write a series of comedies, notably Così fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni ( in collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte ) which remain among the most-loved, popular and well-known operas today.

In between the bass and the tenor is the baritone, which also varies in weight from say, Guglielmo in Mozart's Così fan tutte to Posa in Verdi's Don Carlos ; the actual designation " baritone " was not used until the mid-19th century.

In 1989, Keenlyside joined the roster of Scottish Opera, where he stayed until 1994, performing as, among other roles, Marcello ( La bohème ), Danilo ( The Merry Widow ), Harlequin ( Ariadne auf Naxos ), Guglielmo ( Così fan tutte ), Figaro ( Barber of Seville ), Billy Budd ( Billy Budd ), Papageno ( Zauberflöte ) and Belcore ( L ' elisir d ' amore ).

Schikaneder maintained in the repertory six Mozart operas: Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Le nozze di Figaro, Der Schauspieldirektor, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, La clemenza di Tito, and The Magic Flute.
