DECT has almost universally replaced other standards in most countries where it is used, with the exception of North America.

There has been only one major installation of DECT for public access: in early 1998 Telecom Italia launched a DECT network known as " Fido " after much regulatory delay, covering major cities in Italy.

In business, DECT has become an essential part of many PABX installations with manufacturer's proprietary methods of supporting PABX features over the DECT standard.

The standard has been created to enable home automation, security, healthcare and energy monitoring applications that are battery powered and can easily connect to the web using the large number of existing DECT enabled modems and be managed using a smartphone app.

DECT was developed by ETSI but has since been adopted by many countries all over the world.

The HPA explains that while the DECT cordless phone's radiation has an average output power of 10 mW, it is actually in the form of 100 bursts per second of 250 mW, a strength comparable to some mobile phones.

DECT is used primarily in home and small office systems, but is also available in many PBX systems for medium and large businesses.

DECT can also be used for purposes other than cordless phones.

3G cellular also competes with both DECT and Wi-Fi for both voice and data.

There are also other devices such as some baby monitors utilizing DECT, and in these devices there is no gateway functionality.

The term DECT 6. 0 is also used in Australia.

The mobility management protocol includes many elements similar to the GSM protocol, but also includes elements unique to DECT.

The intent is that two different products from different manufacturers that both conform not only to the DECT standard, but also to the GAP profile defined within the DECT standard, are able to interoperate for basic calling.

The DECT media access control layer also provides encryption services with the DECT Standard Cipher ( DSC ).

DECT also provides Frequency-hopping spread spectrum over TDMA / TDD structure.

Besides digital audio and digital video transmission, DVB also defines data connections ( DVB-DATA-EN 301 192 ) with return channels ( DVB-RC ) for several media ( DECT, GSM, PSTN / ISDN, satellite etc.

Headsets are also available with 2. 5mm jack sockets for many DECT phones and other applications.

While the GSM EDGE standard (" 2. 9G "), DECT cordless phones and Mobile WiMAX standards formally also fulfill the IMT-2000 requirements and are approved as 3G standards by ITU, these are typically not branded 3G, and are based on completely different technologies.

DECT SMS handsets are also preprogrammed for Eircom's SMSC.

Conformance test cases of ETSI standards like ISDN, DECT, GSM, EDGE, 3G, DSRC have also been written in TTCN.

DECT is also used as a private, non-networked, cordless phone system where its low power profile ensures that nearby DECT systems do not interfere with each other.

The Freebox server is a DSL modem, a router, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a NAS ( 250 GB hard drive ), a DECT base with up to 8 connected DECT phone sets, and a digital video recorder for TNT also known as DVB-T and IPTV.

The HPA also acknowledges that due to the mobile phone's adaptive power ability, a DECT cordless phone's radiation could actually exceed the radiation of a mobile phone.

Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications ( Digital European Cordless Telecommunications ), usually known by the acronym DECT, is a digital communication standard, which is primarily used for creating cordless phone systems.

Unlike standard DECT, the low power variant enables this standard to be used in battery powered devices such as smartphone app controllable home automation or security systems.

In Europe the power limit laid down for use of the DECT spectrum ( 250 mW peak ) was expressed in ERP, rather than the more commonly used EIRP, permitting the use of high-gain directional antennas to produce much higher EIRP and hence long ranges.

The original DECT frequency band ( 1880 MHz – 1900 MHz ) is used in all countries in Europe.

TDMA is used in the digital 2G cellular systems such as Global System for Mobile Communications ( GSM ), IS-136, Personal Digital Cellular ( PDC ) and iDEN, and in the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications ( DECT ) standard for portable phones.

The recently allocated 1. 9 GHz band is used by the popular DECT phone standard and is considered more secure than the other shared frequencies.

DECT is used by many businesses to deploy private license-free microcellular networks within large campuses where wireline phone service is less useful.

CT2's successor, DECT, was provided with an interworking profile, GIP so that GSM networks could make use of it for microcellular access, but in practice the success of GSM within Europe, and the ability of GSM to support microcells without using alternative technologies, meant GIP was rarely used, and DECT's use in general was limited to non-GSM private networks, including use as cordless phone systems.

Most consumer-level DECT phones and base stations support the GAP profile, even those that do not publicize the feature, and thus can be used together.

It is primarily used on international trunks in the phone network and is the standard codec used in DECT wireless phone systems.

It is used by DECT, Bluetooth, Cypress WirelessUSB, Nordic Semiconductor, Texas Instruments LPRF, z-wave and Wavenis devices.

Nowadays you can find DECT as well in special applications like Remote Controls for industrial applications.

The DECT standard includes a standardized interoperability profile for simple telephone capabilities, called GAP, which most manufacturers implement.

The DECT standard fully specifies a means for a portable unit, such as a cordless telephone, to access a fixed telecoms network via radio.

The " 6. 0 " in DECT 6. 0 does not specify a spectrum band, but is a marketing term coined by Rick Krupka, Product Director with Siemens, for DECT devices manufactured for use in the U. S. and Canada.

The DECT and DECT 6. 0 technologies are essentially identical, except for operating frequency.

PBX networking vendors such as Cisco promote the adoption of handsets that use VoIP over local Wi-Fi as the replacement for DECT, but this imposes significant overhead on the design and complexity of the Wi-Fi network in order to provide roaming, coverage and reservation of bandwidth, not to mention quality of service.

However, this avoids the need for a separate DECT radio network.

Operates clearly in common congested domestic radio traffic situations, for instance, generally immune to interference from other DECT systems, Wi-Fi networks, video senders, Bluetooth technology, baby monitors and other wireless devices.

Unlike the GSM protocol, the DECT network specifications do not define cross-linkages between the operation of the entities ( for example, Mobility Management and Call Control ).

DECT GAP is an interoperability profile for DECT.
