Darwin was young and generally in good health, though six months previously he had been ill for a month near Valparaiso, but in 1837, almost a year after he returned to England, he began to suffer intermittently from a strange group of symptoms, becoming incapacitated for much of the rest of his life.

Lyell and Hooker were instrumental in arranging the peaceful co-publication of the theory of natural selection by Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858: each had arrived at the theory independently.

Quite strong remarks: no doubt Darwin resented Lyell's repeated suggestion that he owed a lot to Lamarck, whom he ( Darwin ) had always specifically rejected.

John Clements Wickham named the region " Port Darwin " in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage which had ended in October 1836.

Other theories included the pangenesis of Charles Darwin ( which had both acquired and inherited aspects ) and Francis Galton's reformulation of pangenesis as both particulate and inherited.

However, the quote in context shows that Darwin actually had a very good understanding of the evolution of the eye.

Lyell's books had widespread influence, not least on the up and coming young geologist Charles Darwin who read them with enthusiasm during his voyage on the Beagle, and has been described as Lyell's first disciple.

Studies of Charles Darwin's notebooks have shown that Darwin arrived separately at the idea of natural selection which he set out in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, but it has been speculated that he may have had some half-forgotten memory from his time as a student in Edinburgh of ideas of selection in nature as set out by Hutton, and by William Charles Wells and Patrick Matthew who had both been associated with the city before publishing their ideas on the topic early in the 19th century.

Pusey, Darwin responded that he could " hardly see how religion & science can be kept as distinct as he desires, as geology has to treat of the history of the Earth & Biology that of man .— But I most wholly agree with you that there is no reason why the disciples of either school should attack each other with bitterness, though each upholding strictly their beliefs.

" In response to an enquiry about the same sermon from the botanist Henry Nicholas Ridley, Darwin stated that " Dr Pusey was mistaken in imagining that I wrote the Origin with any relation whatever to Theology ", and added that " many years ago when I was collecting facts for the Origin, my belief in what is called a personal God was as firm as that of Dr Pusey himself, & as to the eternity of matter I have never troubled myself about such insoluble questions .— Dr Pusey's attack will be as powerless to retard by a day the belief in evolution as were the virulent attacks made by divines fifty years ago against Geology, & the still older ones of the Catholic church against Galileo ".

In the wake of the initial Japanese raids — and fearing a surface attack — Blake decided to remove all Allied forces from central Darwin and other coastal areas.

In 1942, the threat of attack seemed real ; the city of Darwin was bombed, New Guinea invaded and Japanese reconnaissance aircraft overflew Auckland and Wellington — chased ineffectually by the RNZAF's Lewis gun-toting De Havilland Tiger Moths.

Huxley eagerly used a review to attack " anonymous slander ", telling Darwin that he " ought to be like one of the blessed gods of Elysium, and let the inferior deities do battle with the infernal powers.

Situated on the Timor Sea, Darwin has a population of 127, 500, making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, but the least populous of all Australia's capital cities.

The first British person to see Darwin harbour appears to have been Lieutenant John Lort Stokes of HMS Beagle on 9 September 1839.

They were the first of many raids on Darwin.

Another widely distributed early story mentioning the Darwin Awards is the JATO Rocket Car, which describes a man who strapped a JATO ( Jet-Assisted Take-Off ) unit to his Chevrolet Impala in the Arizona desert and who died gloriously on the side of a cliff as his car achieved speeds of 250 to 300 miles per hour.

In 2006, a comedy film, The Darwin Awards, was written and directed by Finn Taylor, that was based on the website and many of the Darwin Awards stories.

To avoid debates about the possibility of in-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, or cloning, the original Darwin Awards book applied the following " deserted island " test to potential winners: If the person were unable to reproduce when stranded on a deserted island with a fertile member of the opposite sex, he or she would be considered sterile.

During his time at the museum he produced numerous publications on bird taxonomy, and in 1942 his first book, Systematics and the Origin of Species, which completed the evolutionary synthesis started by Darwin.
