After his wife Elaine died on February 1, 1989, his daughter, Lisa, and his lawyers, Lee and John Eastman were granted guardianship over De Kooning.

On September 14, 1964, De Kooning was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson.
