DeMatteis ' Mercy ( 1993 ) one-shot and miniseries The Last One both debuted in 1993, with reprints of two creator-owned Epic Comics projects following in subsequent years: his 1985-7 creator-owned maxiseries Moonshadow was reprinted between 1994-5, with the miniseries Blood: A Tale seeing print again in 1996-7.

Primarily, his Vertigo output has been in collaboration with JM DeMatteis, an issue of Blood: A Tale, the maxiseries Moonshadow ( and its coda, Farewell, Moonshadow ( 1997 )) and three issues of Seekers into the Mystery.

They initially approached writer J. M. DeMatteis to script a prose book with illustrations from Jon J Muth, Kent Williams, Dave McKean and others, but when it reached the stage of confirming the artists ' involvement, the suggested artists all declined to be involved.

At that stage, DeMatteis also decided to step back, and DC instead approached popular writer Neil Gaiman and asked him to come up with a four-issue prestige-format series " about our magic characters ".

During the time that Giffen and DeMatteis were writing the Justice League, the character was shown struggling with his conscience and developing heroic qualities, though he would remain a con-artist.

Maguire's collaborations with Giffen and DeMatteis also include Defenders and Metal Men back-ups in the latest volume of Doom Patrol.
