In 1986, the University of Toronto Debating Union — a university-wide debating club dating back to the 1940s — approached the Hart House Debates Committee and came to an agreement that secured support for the Union from Hart House.

Debates did take place during the 1950s at the British Parliament in Westminster in which it was discussed that Hong Kong would have to be handed back to China if the colony's entrepôt trade could not be maintained.

The Editor of Debates prudishly excluded the quotation from the Official Report ; the entry states only: " The Senator quoted from the book ".

Convenors are Board Members tasked with specific roles, namely Debates, Games, Libraries and Entertainments.

These ranged from Royalists who wished to place King Charles II on the throne, to men like Oliver Cromwell, who wished to govern with a Parliament voted in by an electorate determined by property ownership, similar to that enfranchised before the civil war, to the Levellers, influenced by the writings of John Lilburne, who wanted parliamentary government based on an electorate constituted of every head of household ( normally though not necessarily male as was acknowledged in the Putney Debates ), through to other groups with smaller followings like the Fifth Monarchists, Gerrard Winstanley and the Diggers, the Ranters, and the Society of Friends ( Quakers ).

He supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty like almost all IRB members and during the Dáil Debates criticised some Anti-Treaty TDs.

Although like his brother John, his sympathies like those of his regiment lay with the Levellers, he was not present at the Corkbush Field rendezvous, the first of several meetings planned following the Putney Debates.

Debates on the Reform Bill ( eventually the Reform Act 1832 ) had highlighted the variations in systems of governance of towns, and a Royal Commission was set up to investigate the issue.
