Horse Under Water ( 1963, ISBN 0-399-10419-4 ) is the second of Len Deighton's spy novels featuring an anonymous British agent protagonist ( named Harry Palmer in the film adaptions ).

Another one appears in Len Deighton's spy novel Berlin Game, published in 1983, which contains the following passage, spoken by Bernard Samson:

The IPCRESS File was Len Deighton's first spy novel, published in 1962.

Deighton's interest in spy stories may have been partially inspired by the arrest of Anna Wolkoff, which he witnessed as an 11-year-old boy.

In Deighton's novel, Samson is an unreliable narrator and his words cannot necessarily be taken at face value.

However, the ambiguity this creates between the two versions, while coincidental, is in keeping with the nature of the character and Deighton's theme of agents losing sight of their original lives.

Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding is Deighton's hero in this book, being one of the few people who perceived the situation accurately.

Billion-Dollar Brain ( 1966, ISBN 0-09-985710-3 ) is a Cold War spy novel by Len Deighton, and the fourth protagonised by an anonymous secret agent working for the British WOOC ( P ) intelligence agency.

Gradually, the player pieces together that the main character is an unnamed spy who is being interrogated by an equally anonymous enemy.

As the protagonist also remains anonymous in both of these novels, it is open to debate whether or not ' Harry Palmer ' is the same narrator of these last two novels as in the earlier books.
