* Charles Dickens ' novel, Great Expectations ( first published in serial form in the publication All the Year Round from 1 December 1860 to August 1861 ), contains a reference in chapter 48 to a couple having been married " over the broomstick.

" ( and Chon Wang is thrown into a coffin next to the building at this point ) This is a reference to the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, where the workhouse's undertaker is Mr. Sowerberry.

With the removal of the plinth and plaque, the only remaining reference to the Dickens novel is a quotation from Copperfield's aunt inlaid into the path through the park: "... a little change, and a glimpse of life out of doors, may be useful, in helping you to know your own mind ..."

Scrooge is a common English term for a miserly person, by reference to the fictional character Ebenezer Scrooge, the selfish and miserly protagonist of Charles Dickens ' 1843 novel A Christmas Carol.

Near the end of Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge comments that he was " making a perfect Laocoön of himself with his stockings " which is a direct reference to the statue of Laocoön since Scrooge is in such a rush to get dressed that he becomes entangled in his clothes.

In addition, the name " Artful Loungers ", used for Superior Saturday's servants, may be a reference to " Artful Dodger ", the name of a street thief in Charles Dickens ' novel Oliver Twist.

Although Dickens ' A Christmas Carol and The Chimes do not make any direct reference to the story, the introduction to the Oxford edition of the Christmas Books does do so.

" In reference to his graphic novel Fagin the Jew, Eisner acknowledged parallels between Charles Dickens ' use of racial stereotyping for that character ( which Eisner criticized ) and Eisner's own portrayal of White, but asserted that his own work had not " capitalized on " the stereotype.

" Lefarge " turns out to actually be " Defarge " and is a reference to a Charles Dickens character ; it is a clue to where the aforementioned documents can be found.

The affluence of these brewers was also noted in fiction: in Charles Dickens ’ David Copperfield ( 1850 ), Mrs Micawber makes specific reference to Messrs Truman, Hanbury and Buxton ):

At the same time, however, the remaining scenes are remarkably faithful to the original, with characters often speaking the lines as Dickens wrote them, and little or no simplification of the language to suit a younger audience living over a century later.

In 1859, however, owing to a dispute between Dickens and the publishers, Bradbury and Evans, it was replaced by All the Year Round in which he had greater control.

The poet and novelist Vincent McHugh however, reviewing the novel for the New York Herald Tribune Books in 1936, declared it as having affinities with George Gissing, a writer Orwell greatly admired, and placed the novel in a particular tradition, that of Dickens and Gissing: " Mr Orwell too writes of a world crawling with poverty, a horrible dun flat terrain in which the abuses marked out by those earlier writers have been for the most part only deepened and consolidated.

Some works, however, borrowed from established literary models, such as Dickens.

To compare it to Dickens, however, is ... humbug.

Her character represented Dickens ' view that person, however tainted by society, could still retain a sense of good.

Dickens, however, defended his decision in the Preface to the story when it appeared in novel-form, explaining that it was his intention to show criminals, however petty, in " all their deformity ", and that he had thought that dressing Nancy in anything other than " a cheap shawl " would make her seem more fanciful than real as a character.

In Dickens ' age, however, this notion was rather revolutionary.

Mrs. Gaskell, influenced by the work of her husband, does not hesitate to put in the mouth of the workers of Milton dialectal expressions and vocabulary of Lancashire, Manchester, more specifically, but without however going so far as Emily Bronte in her transcription of the particular pronunciation of Yorkshire or Dickens in the syntax of the fishermen of Yarmouth in David Copperfield.

Dickens suggests the economic evils of such a society on the first page of his novel in the description of Pip's five little dead brothers `` who gave up trying to get a living exceedingly early in that universal struggle '', who seemed to have `` all been born on their backs with their hands in their trousers-pockets, and had never taken them out in this state of existence ''.

These hard times, Mr. Suskind ’ s book suggests, call for a nonfiction Dickens .”

Nagg suggests nagging and the German nagen ( to gnaw ), while Nell recalls Dickens ' Little Nell.

A year before Blamire's authorship of her best known Scottish Song ' The Siller Croun ' had been acknowledged in her 1842 ' Poetical Works ', she was paid a compliment unknowingly by Charles Dickens in his ' The Old Curiosity Shop ' ( end of chapter 66 ) where he quoted The Siller Croun's first two lines: " ' Sir ' said Dick, ... ' we'll make a scholar of the poor Marchioness yet!

An instinctive sympathy with the moral ( and therefore the artistic ) prejudices of the everyday man guided Dickens throughout his career, teaching him when, and how far, he might strike at things he thought evil, yet never defeat his prime purpose of sending forth fiction acceptable to the multitude.

Dickens, for excellent psychological reasons, never fully reveals Magwitch's felonious past, but Pip, at the convict's climactic reappearance in London, shrinks from clasping a hand which he fears `` might be stained with blood ''.

One of his ancestors is John Elwes, who is believed to be the inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol ( 1843 ) ( Elwes played five roles in the 2009 film adaptation of the novel ).

The story is told almost entirely from the point of view of the first person narrator, David Copperfield himself, and was the first Dickens novel to be written as such a narration.

Tolstoy regarded Dickens as the best of all English novelists and considered Copperfield his finest work, ranking the " Mischief " chapter ( chapter 42 ) the standard by which the world's great fiction should be judged.

In 1853 it published an anonymous and unfavourable review of Charles Dickens ’ Bleak House, later revealed to be by George Brimley, typical of the paper's enduring contempt for him as a ‘ popular ’ writer " amusing the idle hours of the greatest number of readers ; not, we may hope, without improvement to their hearts, but certainly without profoundly affecting their intellects or deeply stirring their emotions.

Dickens ' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.

Following publication, Dickens arranged for the manuscript to be bound in red Morocco leather and presented as a gift to his solicitor, Thomas Mitton.

'" Thackeray wrote about Tiny Tim, " There is not a reader in England but that little creature will be a bond of union between the author and him ; and he will say of Charles Dickens, as the woman just now, ' GOD BLESS HIM!

Dickens had wounded their national pride with American Notes for General Circulation and Martin Chuzzlewit, but Carol was too compelling to be dismissed, and, by the end of the American Civil War, copies of the book were in wide circulation.

In the years following the book's publication, responses to the tale were published by W. M. Swepstone ( Christmas Shadows, 1850 ), Horatio Alger ( Job Warner's Christmas, 1863 ), Louisa May Alcott ( A Christmas Dream, and How It Came True, 1882 ), and others who followed Scrooge's life as a reformed man – or some who thought Dickens had gotten it wrong and needed to be corrected.

( It may well be that Bart based his musical on David Lean's film, rather than Dickens ' book.

The Sudbury election of 1835, which Charles Dickens reported for the Morning Chronicle, is thought by many experts to be the inspiration for the famous Eatanswill election in his novel Pickwick Papers.
