Among his three main teachers were Jamgon Kongtrul of Sechen, HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and Khenpo Gangshar.

Chögyam Trungpa also received support from one of his own main teachers, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma lineage.

Two of the most famous tertön in the 20th century, Dudjom Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, were of the Nyingma school.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche () ( c. 1910 – 28 September 1991 ) was a Vajrayana master, scholar, poet, teacher, and head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism from 1987 to 1991.

During the next few years Dilgo Khyentse received full schooling from various tutors, in addition to training in meditation, and in the study of the Dharma in general, and of Tantra specifically.

After receiving from Khyentse Chokyi Lodro the many empowerments of the Rinchen Terdzo ( the collection of Revealed Treasures or termas ), Dilgo Khyentse requested to spend the rest of his life in solitary meditation.

Later on His Holiness the Dalai Lama would regard Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche as his principal teacher in the Nyingma tradition and of Dzogchen.

Over this same time period, and up until his paranirvana in 1991, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche was involved in publishing as much of Tibet ’ s extraordinary heritage of Buddhist teachings as possible, over three hundred volumes altogether.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche often sought out and received any oral transmission he thought was on the verge of disappearing.

Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, who currently resides in Bhutan, was appointed as the incarnation of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche on December 1995:

As such, it received important visits from eminent teachers of many traditions, including first the Very Venerable Kalu Rinpoche ( 1973 and therefater ), His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa ( 1975 and 1977 ), Khamtrul Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyense Rinpoche and Urgyen Tulku.

In addition to numerous sadhanas and poems dedicated to Trungpa, Khyentse Rinpoche wrote a supplication after Trungpa's death specifically naming him a mahasiddha.

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche states that in the four seals of the Mahayana, Nirvana should be viewed as " beyond extremes ".

In the 2009 documentary film Tulku, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche argues against the institutionalized Tulku system stating,

Many people found flowers in the horse's hoof-prints ; it is said that Khyentse Rinpoche has some of these in his possession.

In response to this one of his spiritual masters, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo praised him saying, " He is really the precious master from Oddiyana Rinpoche in the flesh.

When he was seven years old, he was publicly recognized as one of the reincarnations of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo by Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche ( 1871 – 1926 ) at Shechen, one of the six principal monasteries of the Nyingmapa school.

Varela became a Tibetan Buddhist in the 1970s, initially studying, together with Keun-Tshen Goba, with the meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, founder of Vajradhatu and Shambhala Training, and later with Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, a Nepalese meditation master of higher tantras.

Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche ( Wylie: Chos rgyam Drung pa ; February 28, 1939 – April 4, 1987 ) was a Buddhist meditation master and holder of both the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages, the eleventh Trungpa tülku, a tertön, supreme abbot of the Surmang monasteries, scholar, teacher, poet, artist, and originator of a radical re-presentation of Shambhala vision.

Upon the death of Chögyam Trungpa, the leadership of Vajradhatu was first carried on by his American disciple, appointed regent and Dharma heir, Ösel Tendzin ( Thomas Rich ), and then by Trungpa's eldest son and Shambhala heir, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

The eleventh Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche possessed all nine of these.

As the third Jamgön Kongtrül explained in a teaching given to students of Chögyam Trungpa, " You shouldn't imitate or judge the behavior of your teacher, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, unless you can imitate his mind.

A disciple of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, she is an ordained nun, author, and teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage which Trungpa founded.

Ani Pema first met Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1972, and at the urging of Chime Rinpoche, she took him as her root guru (" Ani " is a Tibetan honorific for a nun ).

Reginald " Reggie " Ray is a leading Buddhist academic and Vajra Master, teaching and practicing in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche for forty years.

He was teacher in Residence at Shambhala Mountain Center from 1996 – 2004, and co-founded the Dharma Ocean Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the practice, study and preservation of the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the practice lineage he embodied.

It was during his years in graduate school that Ray first encountered his main teacher, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and began a seventeen year apprenticeship with him ended by Rinpoche ’ s death in 1987.

Tibetan lamas such as the Karmapa ( Rangjung Rigpe Dorje ), Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Geshe Wangyal, Geshe Lhundub Sopa, Dezhung Rinpoche, Sermey Khensur Lobsang Tharchin, Tarthang Tulku, Lama Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche all established teaching centers in the West from the 1970s.
