Two exceptional large-scale psalm motets, Ad Dominum cum tribularer ( a8 ) and Domine quis habitabit ( a9 ), are Byrd's contribution to a genre cultivated by Robert White and Robert Parsons.

A well-known instance of the " John Cardinal Doe " style is that in the proclamation, in Latin, of the election of a new pope by the cardinal protodeacon: " Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum ; habemus Papam: Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum ( first name ) Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem ( last name ), ..." ( Meaning: " I announce to you a great joy ; we have a Pope: The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord, Lord ( first name ) Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church ( last name ), ...")

Nevertheless, the author of the Liber Historiae Francorum, thoroughly hostile to the memory of Ebroin, invariably referred to Audoin as " blessed " or " sainted ," and in describing his death said he " migravit ad Dominum ," a phrase he otherwise reserved in the original part of his history for the death of the " glorious lord of good memory, Childebert "( III ), " the just king.

The usual grace given before Formal Hall is Benedictus, Benedicat per Jesum Christum Dominum Nostrum ( Blessed is He and may he bless food through Jesus Christ Our Lord ) to which the assembly responds Amen.

In the Gallican books this passage ends with some expression, generally simply " per Christum Dominum nostrum ", which serves as the antecedent to " Qui pridie "; but, owing to the interpolated prayer " Adesto, adesto Jesu ", etc., the Recital of the Institution begins with a fresh sentence with no relative.

The first part of the grace is read by a scholar or exhibitioner of the House before formal Hall each evening, ending with the words Per Iēsum Christum Dominum nostrum (" Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

It is not quite certain whether the last three are the works of Hermann, though they are generally ascribed to him.

So, if 1 ... Qxd5 white can play 2. Ra8 + Qxa8, when the queen is deflected from her defence of g8, allowing 3. Rg8 #, while if 1 ... Bxd5 white can play 2. Rg8 + Bxg8, deflecting the bishop from defence of a8, allowing 3. Ra8 #.

( The white bishop is useless ; it cannot defend the queening square at a8 nor attack the black pawn on the light a4 square.

Analogous mates on a1 and a8 are rarer, because kingside castling is the more common as it safely places the king closer to the corner than it would had the castling occurred on the queenside.

The best Black can do is 1 ... R2xd5, interfering with the bishop's guard of a8 and allowing 2. a8Q.

After 7. Nc3 Black has the zwischenzug 7 ... Qh4 + 8. g3 Bxc3 + 9. bxc3 Qe7 so that the diagonal a8 – h1 is weakened before Black develops the Bc8 to the b7-square.
