Each year, until 2012, the Racing Post Chase, a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race, was held at Kempton Park in late February and the Racing Post Trophy, a Group 1 flat horse race for 2-year-olds over a mile ( 1600m ), is held at Doncaster in late October.

On his next start, high Chaparral was sent to England to run in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

West Anglia Great Northern made an Open Access application to extend services to Doncaster but this was rejected by the Office of Rail Regulation.

The airport faces competition for flights from East Midlands Airport (), Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield () which opened in 2005 and Leeds Bradford International Airport (); all of these airports offer a substantially wider range of scheduled flights than Humberside Airport, although Robin Hood Airport has also seen large reductions in holiday flights during the last 12 months.

The Great Northern Railway heading north to Grantham and Doncaster ( the Towns Line ) opened in 1853 using the GNR station.

While the Sheriff of Nottingham and the town itself appear in early ballads, and Sherwood is specifically mentioned in the early ballad Robin Hood and the Monk, certain of the original ballads ( even those with Nottingham references ) locate Robin on occasion in Barnsdale ( the area between Pontefract and Doncaster ), approximately fifty miles north of Nottingham, in the county of Yorkshire ; furthermore, it has been suggested that the ballads placed in this area are far more geographically specific and accurate.

There is something of a modern movement amongst Yorkshire residents to attempt to claim the legend of Robin Hood, to the extent that South Yorkshire's new airport, on the site of the redeveloped RAF Finningley airbase near Doncaster, although ironically in the historic county of Nottinghamshire, has been given the name Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield.

The town is situated on an old Roman road ( now the A639 ), described as the " Roman Ridge ", which passes south towards Doncaster.

Doncaster is built on the site of a Roman fort which was constructed in the 1st century AD at a crossing of the River Don.

The fact that Doncaster is included highlights the importance placed by the Romans on Doncaster.

This was not always practical and thus Doncaster became an important staging post on the Roman map.

The Roman road through Doncaster appears on two routes recorded in the Antonine Itinerary.

In 1612, Edward Denny gave him the curacy of Waltham-Holy-Cross, Essex, and, in the same year, he received the degree of D. D .. Later he received the prebend of Willenhall in the collegiate church of Wolverhampton, and, in 1616, he accompanied James Hay, Lord Doncaster to France, where he was sent to congratulate Louis XIII on his marriage, but Hall was compelled by illness to return.

On 14 February 1663, at the age of 14, shortly after having been brought to England, James was created Duke of Monmouth with the subsidiary titles of Earl of Doncaster and Baron Scott of Tynedale, all three in the Peerage of England, and on 28 March 1663 he was appointed a Knight of the Garter.

His dukedom of Monmouth was forfeited, but the subsidiary titles of that dukedom ( Earl of Doncaster and Baron Scott of Tindale ) were restored to his grandson, Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch ( 1695 – 1751 ), on 23 March 1743.

The rail links in the area are also good, Worksop lies on the Sheffield-Lincoln line, this takes travellers to places such as Sheffield, Doncaster, Meadowhall, Lincoln, Retford, Gainsborough and Shireoaks.

A copy of Apollo's Medley, dating to around 1790, published in Doncaster and rediscovered in 2010, contains a song referring to " Sweet Molly Malone " on its page 78-this ends with the line " Och!
