Symbolist imagery lived on longest in horror film: as late as 1932, Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr showed the obvious influence of symbolist imagery ; parts of the film resemble tableau vivant re-creations of the early paintings of Edvard Munch.

Later that year on december 6th, a fire at UFA studios in Berlin destroyed the film's original negative and only a few copies of Dreyer's original cut of the film existed.

Over the years it became hard to find copies of Dreyer's second version and even harder to find copies of the original version of the film.

In 1951 Joseph-Marie Lo Duca found a copy of the negative of Dreyer's second version of the film in the Gaumont Studios vaults.

Krogh cut together scenes and sequences from several different available prints of the film to attempt to create a version that was as true to Dreyer's original cut of the film as possible.

The original version of the film was lost for decades after a fire destroyed the master negative and only variations of Dreyer's second version were available.

It was then discovered that the prints were of Dreyer's original cut of the film before government or church censorship had taken place.

In the 1950s, some of the well-known films with artistic sensibilities include La Strada ( 1954 ), a film about a young woman who is forced to go to work for a cruel and inhumane circus performer in order to support her family and eventually coming to terms with her situation, Carl Theodor Dreyer's Ordet ( 1956 ), centering around family with a lack of faith amongst it but with a son who believes that he is Jesus Christ and convinced that he is capable of performing miracles, Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria ( 1957 ), which deals with a prostitute's failed attempts to find love, and her suffering and rejections, and Wild Strawberries ( 1957 ), by Ingmar Bergman, whose narrative concerns an elderly medical doctor and professor whose nightmares lead him to re-evaluate his life, and The 400 Blows ( 1959 ) by François Truffaut, whose main character is a young man trying to come of age despite the abuse from his parents, schoolteachers, and society in general.

Dreyer's last film was 1964's Gertrud.

Although seen by some as a lesser film than its predecessors, it is a fitting close to Dreyer's career, as it deals with a woman who, through the tribulations of her life, never expresses regret for her choices.

Renée Jeanne Falconetti ( July 21, 1892 – December 12, 1946 ), sometimes credited as Maria Falconetti, Marie Falconetti, Renée Maria Falconetti, or, simply, Falconetti, was a French stage and film actress, notable for her role as Joan of Arc in Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent film, La Passion de Jeanne d ' Arc.

According to film critic Roger Ebert, Dreyer's method of directing his actors pushed Falconetti to emotional collapse:

Carl Theodor Dreyer ’ s La Passion de Jeanne d ’ Arc ( The Passion of Joan of Arc ), though made in the late 1920s ( and therefore without the assistance of computer graphics ), includes a relatively graphic and realistic treatment of Jeanne ’ s execution ; his Day of Wrath also featured a woman burnt at the stake.

During the last four years of his life Martin was engaged upon a triptych of very large biblical subjects: The Last Judgment, The Great Day of His Wrath, and The Plains of Heaven, of which two were bequeathed to Tate Britain in 1974, the other having been acquired for the Tate some years earlier.

The Great Day of His Wrath is used on the cover of Lustmord's iconic album, " Heresy ".

The Great Day of His Wrath can also be seen adorning a wall in the computer game Zork Nemesis.
