In 1614 Constantijn wrote his first Dutch poem, inspired by the French poet Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas, in which he praises rural life.

It excited violent dislike to Ronsard on the part of the Huguenots, who wrote constant pasquinades against him, strove ( by a ridiculous exaggeration of the Dionysiac festival at Arcueil, in which the friends had indulged to celebrate the success of the first French tragedy, Jodelle's Cleopatre ) to represent him as a libertine and an atheist, and ( which seems to have annoyed him more than anything else ) set up his follower Du Bartas as his rival.

The metre ( the decasyllable ) the king chose could not but contrast unfavourably with the magnificent alexandrines that Du Bartas and Agrippa d ' Aubigné were shortly to produce ; the general plan is feebly classical, and the very language has little or nothing of that racy mixture of scholarliness and love of natural beauty which distinguishes the best work of the Pléiade.

At first, as has been said, the enmity, not altogether unprovoked, of the friends and followers of Marot fell to his lot, then the still fiercer antagonism of the Huguenot faction, who, happening to possess a poet of great merit in Du Bartas, were able to attack Ronsard in his tenderest point.

In sixteenth-century France, writers such as Guillaume Du Bartas, Gabrielle de Coignard and Anne de Marquets composed poems on Judith's triumph over Holofernes.

The Sepmaines of Du Bartas appealed most to his English and German co-religionists, and the translation was immensely popular.

Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas writes of the vegetable lamb in his poem La Semaine ( 1587 ).

In England the famous translation ( 1592 – 1611 ) by Joshua Sylvester of the Divine Weeks and Works of Du Bartas, containing such lines as those that the juvenile Dryden admired so much:

Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas ( 1544 – July 1590 ) was a French poet.

It was followed quickly by La Seconde Sepmaine ( 1584 ) which Du Bartas did not manage to finish before falling fatally ill.

James VI of Scotland was particularly impressed by Du Bartas after receiving a volume of his poetry in 1579.

Du Bartas responded by translating James ' Lepanto and in 1587 he was sent by Henry of Navarre to the Scottish court to discuss the possibility of James marrying Henri's sister.

Although poetry was also a shared interest, James failed in his attempt to persuade Du Bartas to stay in Edinburgh.

The Period of Division with its many tragedies and dramatic historical developments inspired many poets and gave rise to some Vietnamese masterpieces in verse, including the epic poem The Tale of Kiều ( Truyện Kiều ) by Nguyễn Du, Song of a Soldier's Wife ( Chinh Phụ Ngâm ) by Đặng Trần Côn and Đoàn Thị Điểm, and a collection of satirical, erotically charged poems by a female poet, Hồ Xuân Hương.
