Dunstan, whilst in exile became influenced by the Benedictines of Flanders and a pro-Dunstan, pro-Benedictine party began to form around Athelstan Half-King's domain of East Anglia supporting Eadwig's younger brother Edgar.

Frustrated by the king's impositions and supported by Archbishop Odo, the Thanes of Mercia and Northumbria switched their allegiance to Eadwig's brother Edgar.

Æthelweard was a descendant of King Æthelred of Wessex and probably the brother of King Eadwig's wife.

Oda crowned King Eadwig in 956, but in late 957 the archbishop joined Eadwig's rival and brother Edgar who had been proclaimed king of the Mercians in 957, while Eadwig continued to rule Wessex.

This denied that Edward was the son of a liaison between Edgar and a nun, and presented him as the son of Æthelflæd, daughter of Ordmær, " ealdorman of the East Anglians ," whom Edgar had married in the years when he ruled Mercia, that is, between 957 and Eadwig's death in 959.

Upon Eadwig's death in October 959, Edgar immediately recalled Dunstan ( eventually canonised as St. Dunstan ) from exile to have him made Bishop of Worcester ( and subsequently Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury ).

When Edgar succeeded on Eadwig's death in 959 she recovered some lands and received generous gifts from her grandson, but she never returned to her prominent position at court.

The event needs to be placed in the broader context of Eadwig's struggle to retain political control and of the factions which supported Edgar as the heir presumptive.

Edgar's relationship with his wife was precisely the same as Eadwig's and the consanguinity of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is slightly closer.

Byrhtferth writes that Eadwig's mistress was exiled by Oda ( d. 958 ), but his account of the archbishop's intervention is dubious and only faintly echoes the historical information of the Chronicle.

Adopting B's depiction of Edgar's Mercian reign as the outcome of a very coup against Eadwig, he amplifies the story by suggesting that Eadwig's mistress ( adultera ) was hamstrung in an ambush by Mercian resurgents and died not long thereafter.

Some historians have suggested that he was the Æthelhelm who was Ealdorman of Wiltshire, the probable father of Edward the Elder's second wife Ælfflæd, but Barbara Yorke rejected the idea, arguing that it does not appear to have been the practice for Æthelings ( princes of the royal dynasty who were eligible to be king ) to become ealdormen, that in a grant from Alfred to Ealdorman Æthelhelm there is no reference to kinship between them, and that the hostile reception to King Eadwig's marriage to Ælfgifu, his third cousin once removed, shows that a marriage between Edward and his first cousin once removed would have been forbidden as incestuous.

This only delayed Edmund's son Eadwig's accession to the throne, as Eadred died without issue.

The exact cause of the rupture between the two brothers that lead to the division of the previously united kingdom is unknown, but may have resulted from Eadwig's efforts to promote close kinsmen and his wife.

Her union with the king, annulled within a few years of Eadwig's reign, seems to have been a target for factional rivalries which surrounded the throne in the late 950s.

It is probable that they are the two women who are portrayed as Eadwig's sexual partners in the Life of St Dunstan by author ' B ' and that of St. Oswald by Byrhtferth of Ramsey, both dating from around 1000.

According to one legend, the feud with Dunstan began on the day of Eadwig's consecration, when he failed to attend a meeting of nobles.

Though Dunstan managed to escape, he refused to return to England until after Eadwig's death.

The contemporary record of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports Eadwig's accession and Dunstan fleeing England-but does not explain why Dunstan fled.

Shocked by Eadwig's unseemly withdrawal, the nobles sent Dunstan and Bishop Cynesige, who forcefully dragged the king back to the feast.

However, Æthelwold attended Eadwig's court in at least some of the years of his reign, 955-59.

He was the younger brother of King Edgar, who was unmarried, and his brother's heir presumptive by 1104 ( and perhabs earlier ).

The point of naming Margaret's sons, Edward after her father Edward the Exile, Edmund for her grandfather Edmund Ironside, Ethelred for her great-grandfather Ethelred the Unready and Edgar for her great-great-grandfather Edgar and her brother, briefly the elected king, Edgar Ætheling, was unlikely to be missed in England, where William of Normandy's grasp on power was far from secure.

After the death of King Eadred in 955, England was divided between his two sons, with the elder Edwy ruling in Wessex while Mercia passed to his younger brother Edgar.
