On 15 January 1831 he took the surname of Harcourt only on inheriting the large estates of the Harcourt family, which came to him on the death of his cousin, Field-marshal William, third and last Earl Harcourt.

Chambers, in his book about Malvern, praised Elizabeth, Countess Harcourt ( daughter-in-law of the 1st Earl Harcourt ), whose patronage contributed to the development of hillside walks.

Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl Harcourt, of Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, PC, FRS, Viceroy of Ireland ( 1714 – 16 September 1777 ), known as 2nd Viscount Harcourt, of Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, between 1727 and 1749, was a British diplomat and general.

Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl Harcourt, was educated at Westminster School.

In 1749 he was created Earl Harcourt of Stanton Harcourt.

In 1868, the 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury inherited the Earldom of Cardigan, and so the Marquesses of Ailesbury now also hold the titles Earl of Cardigan ( 1661 ) and Baron Brudenell, of Stanton Wyvill in the County of Leicester ( 1628 ), in the Peerage of England, as well as being Baronets of England, styled " of Deene in the County of Northampton ".
