In the 20th century, there has been more contact between Protestants and Christians from Eastern traditions which claim apostolic succession for their ministry.

The creed has never gained much acceptance in liturgy among Eastern Christians.

Some Christians, such as Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, also have traditions of fasting, in which saints, as well as Jesus, are claimed to have been able to go for a period of time ( without any food, or with no food but the Eucharist ).

Most Christians ( Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Rite and Protestants alike ) accept the use of creeds, and subscribe to at least one of the creeds mentioned above.

Eastern Christians of eastern Europe and western Asia used for a long time the Julian Calendar, that of the old Orthodox church, in countries like Russia.

In Greek, the adjective kyriak-ós /- ē /- ón means " belonging, or pertaining, to a Kýrios " (" Lord "), and the usage was adopted by early Christians of the Eastern Mediterranean with regard to anything pertaining to the Lord Jesus Christ: hence " Kyriakós oíkos " (" house of the Lord ", church ), " Kyriakē " (" day of the Lord ", i. e. Sunday ), or " Kyriakē proseukhē " ( the " Lord's prayer ").

It is especially important in the Catholic Church, but is also used in Orthodox and Eastern Catholic, as well as Anglican, and Lutheran churches, ( though less often in other Protestant churches ), and it emphasizes Jesus ' sacrifice — his death by crucifixion, which Christians believe brought about the redemption of mankind.

Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox Christians, and some Protestants teach the Sacrament of Baptism is the means by which each person's damaged human nature is healed and Sanctifying Grace ( capacity to enjoy and participate in the spiritual life of God ) is restored.

Most Christians believe that the kosher food laws do not apply to them as they are no longer under the Law of Moses, and that, as Jesus taught in Mark 7: what you eat doesn't make you unclean but what comes out of a man's heart makes him unclean — although Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy have their own set of dietary observances.

In the Middle East, Orthodox Christians have also been often referred as Roman ( or Rum ) Orthodox, because of their historical connection with the Eastern Roman ( Byzantine ) Empire as said in Chapter 30 ( Sura Rum ) of the Quran.

While the previous seven ecumenical councils are recognized as ecumenical and authoritative by both East and West, many Eastern Orthodox Christians recognize the council of 879 as the Eighth Ecumenical Council, arguing that it annulled the earlier one.

Greek medicine was part of Greek culture, and Syrian Eastern Christians came in contact with it while the Eastern Roman Empire ( Byzantium ) ruled Syria and Western Mesopotamia, regions that were conquered from Byzantium in the 7th century by Arab Muslims.

Saint Herman of Alaska ( born 1756 or 1760 in Serpukhov, Russia – died December 13 or November 15, 1837 on Spruce Island, Alaska ) was one of the first Eastern Orthodox missionaries to the New World, and is considered by Orthodox Christians to be the patron saint of the Americas.
