Echols County is a county located in the U. S. state of Georgia.

Statenville is not an incorporated municipality, making Echols County one of only three counties in Georgia to have an unincorporated county seat.

He was killed in the Mexican-American War, and is buried in Georgia ( though not in Echols County ).

Echols County has become notable in recent years as it has served as a place of banishment for many of Georgia's criminals.

The system managed to give votes to Fulton County at a proportion of one-tenth the county population while giving Echols County a vote which was 10 times the population of the county.

Echols was born in Georgia and served in the state legislature for many years.

The subregion is synonymous with coastal Georgia, and contains the counties of Atkinson, Bacon, Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Glynn, Lanier, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne, south of the Altamaha River ; and Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh, north of the Altamaha River.

Under Lt. William Echols in 1859, caravans of the U. S. Camel Corps crossed the county searching for a shorter route to Fort Davis.

Established in 1858, from the parts of Lowndes and Clinch the county was named in honor of Robert Milner Echols ( 1798 – 1847 ).
