Edison could hardly have guessed, however, that Sophocles would one day appear in stereo.

Edison sued to gain control of the patent ; however, after a federal court upheld the validity of the patent in 1907, Edison began negotiation with Biograph in May 1908 to reorganize the Edison licensing system.

The Bell and Edison patents, however, were forensically victorious and commercially decisive.

Most, however, used the Edison / Berliner carbon transmitter, which was much louder than the other kinds, even though it required an induction coil which was an impedance matching transformer to make it compatible with the impedance of the line.

It was Edison's format, however, that became first the dominant standard and then the " official " standard of the newly formed Motion Picture Patents Company, a trust established by Edison, which agreed in 1909 to what would become the standard: 35 mm gauge, with Edison perforations and a 1. 3 aspect ratio.

More disturbing, however, was the fact that the initial causal sequence of events at TMI had been duplicated 18 months earlier at another Babcock and Wilcox reactor, the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station owned at that time by Toledo Edison.

An alternative view, however, used to be popular: The 1971 edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, for instance, claims that Edison " apparently thought so little of his invention that he failed to pay the $ 150 that would have granted him an international copyright.

Sales continued to drop, however, and although Edison Discs were available from dealers until the company left the record business in late October 1929, the last vertically-cut direct masters were recorded in the early summer of that year.

After a few experimental run-throughs, record producer Fred Gaisberg signed Dawson to an exclusive contract to cut discs for the Gramophone Company ( the predecessor of HMV / EMI ) in 1906 ; he continued, however, to record on cylinders for Edison until that company closed its London studios not long before World War I erupted.

Per procedure, Con Edison, the power provider for New York City and some of Westchester County, tried to start fast-start generation at 8: 45 p. m. EDT ; however, no one was manning the station, and the remote start failed.

Their business, however, proved lucrative until the advent of Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company ( also known as the Edison Trust ), which charged distributors exorbitant fees.

Her Edison recordings, however, represent not only some of the best operatic recordings released by that company, but also Muzio's power and ability to project her personal intensity through the difficult acoustic recording process.

The names of prominent persons who fit the college's theme of Culture, Art, and Technology, such as Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Chester Cesolini have been proposed by students, but never seriously considered by the administration.

In 1905, the Lumières ended their production of actualities, and within the next couple of years, major producers such as Edison and Biograph began to abandon the actuality genre ; by 1907, American Biograph was no longer making them, and new start up companies such as Kalem never produced them at all, concentrating instead on fiction films with actors.

Thus the railroad's name was changed from the Pawnee Railroad to the Chicago and Illinois Midland Railway Company, drawing its name not from its terminal points ( the C & IM never went to Chicago ), but from its corporate parents: Chicago Edison and Illinois Midland Coal Company.

In 1907, Griffith, still writing as a playwright, went to New York and attempted to sell a script to Edison Studios producer Edwin Porter.

Later on in Chicago, Illinois he attempted to enter the film business using his own photographic equipment, free from patent restrictions imposed through companies controlled by Thomas Edison.

From distillation of chemicals, to the vulcanization of the wet residues produced, anything and everything was attempted by Edison and his workers.

* 1892 – Thomas Edison receives a patent for a two-way telegraph.

* 1876 – Thomas Edison receives a patent for his mimeograph.

Edison was awarded a patent for this invention in 1884.

Since there was no apparent practical use for such a device at the time, the patent application was most likely simply a precaution in case someone else did find a use for the so-called Edison effect.

* 1931 – Thomas Edison submits his last patent application.

The Edison Manufacturing Company's patent lawsuits against each of its domestic competitors crippled the American film industry, reducing American production mainly to two companies: Edison and Biograph, which used a different camera design.

Thomas Edison received US patent 180, 857 for " Autographic Printing " on August 8, 1876.

In 1880 Edison obtained a further patent, US 224, 665: " Method of Preparing Autographic Stencils for Printing ", which covered the making of stencils using a file plate, a grooved metal plate on which the stencil was placed which perforated the stencil when written on with a blunt metal stylus.

* 1888 – Thomas Edison files a patent for the Optical Phonograph ( the first movie ).

Bell had married Hubbard's daughter Mabel in 1879 while Hubbard was president of the Edison Speaking Phonograph Co., and his organization, which had purchased the Edison patent, was financially troubled because people did not want to buy a machine which seldom worked well and proved difficult for the average person to operate.

In 1904, The U. S. Patent Office reversed its decision, awarding Marconi a patent for the invention of radio, possibly influenced by Marconi's financial backers in the States, who included Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie.

In Britain, Joseph Swan had been able to obtain a patent on the incandescent lamp ; though Edison had already been making successful lamps for some time, his patent application was incompletely prepared and failed.

After protracted patent litigation, in 1892 a federal court ruled that Edison and not Emile Berliner was the inventor of the carbon microphone.

Edison continued to improve this design and by November 4, 1879, filed for U. S. patent 223, 898 ( granted on January 27, 1880 ) for an electric lamp using " a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires ".

Although the patent described several ways of creating the carbon filament including " cotton and linen thread, wood splints, papers coiled in various ways ", it was not until several months after the patent was granted that Edison and his team discovered a carbonized bamboo filament that could last over 1, 200 hours.
