This extended to Edward's elder sister, the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, Mary Tudor, who was a pious and devout Catholic.

In the same year Cnut had Edward's last surviving elder half-brother, Eadwig, executed, leaving Edward as the leading Anglo-Saxon claimant to the throne.

A tragic turn of events lead to the bloody 1271 confrontation between Guy and Simon and their cousin Henry of Almain ( also Edward's cousin, by virtue of his father, Henry III being elder brother to both Eleanor of England and Henry of Almain's father, Richard, Earl of Cornwall ).

The reason for this action is not clear but it may be that they had no confidence that they could defend the castle against the English forces, and did not want to let it fall intact into Edward's, or their elder brother's hands.

On Æthelred's death his wife ( Edward's sister ) Æthelflæd ruled as " Lady of the Mercians " and continued expansion.

Margaret's father became King in Edward's place, and her older sister became heiress presumptive with Margaret second in line to the throne.

In 1486 Edward's sister, Elizabeth, married Henry VII, thereby uniting the Houses of York and Lancaster.

Although he supported the Lancastrian cause, Exeter had family ties to the House of York ; he was husband to Anne of York, Edward's sister.

He seems to have taken advantage of Edward's death to encroach south, but in 926 he came to an agreement with Æthelstan, accepting Christianity and marrying his only known full sister, thus implicitly accepting Æthelstan's superiority.

Edward's son Edward V was thus Buckingham's second cousin, as was the younger Edward's sister Elizabeth of York, later wife and Queen consort of Henry VII of England.

Others, while remarking upon the plan's sloppy implementation, have seen Northumberland as behind the scheme, yet in concord with Edward's convictions ; the Duke acting out of despair for his own survival, or to rescue political and religious reform and save England from Habsburg domination.

Both were acting as Regents during Edward's minority following their murder of his father Edward II at Berkeley Castle.

In 1330, Montagu was one of Edward's main accomplices in the coup against Roger Mortimer, who up until then had been acting as the king's protector.

He played an important part in Edward's administration, acting both as diplomat and military commander, and in 1321 – 22 helped suppress a rebellion against the king.

Therefore between the years of 1893 – 1910 and 1936 – 1952, the Imperial crown was bestowed upon the cross ; between the years of 1910 – 1936 and from 1952 onwards, it was the Saint Edward's crown.

Canada's Victoria Cross is thus a cross pattée with straight arms, across in each direction, and made out of bronze coloured alloy, the obverse bearing a lion crowned and statant guardant, similar to that which forms the crest of the Royal Arms of Canada, standing upon a representation of St. Edward's Crown, which itself rests above a semi-circular scroll.

The crown upon the lion supporter is St. Edward's Crown, which has been a symbol of Royal Authority throughout the Commonwealth of Nations | Commonwealth since 1953.
