His son Thomas, aged fifteen when he entered Oxford in 1582, married as his first wife Margaret, sister of Sir Edward Greville.

They had five or six children together, including Edward the Elder, who succeeded his father as king, Æthelflæd, who would become Queen of Mercia in her own right, and Ælfthryth who married Baldwin II the Count of Flanders.

Excluding those princesses who have married into overseas Roman Catholic royal families, only one member of the Royal Family ( that is, with the style of Royal Highness ) has converted to Roman Catholicism since the passage of the act: the Duchess of Kent, wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.

During one of her visits she met and later married Edward Lind, a Danish merchant who worked in the Hacienda La Henriqueta in the town of Arroyo.

In 1936, her husband unexpectedly became King when his brother, Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson.

Just months into his reign, Edward forced a constitutional crisis by insisting on marrying the American divorcée Mrs Wallis Simpson.

However, later that year Edward revealed his desire to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson.

Wallis, Duchess of Windsor ( previously Wallis Simpson and Wallis Spencer, born Bessie Wallis Warfield ; 19 June 1896 – 24 April 1986 ), was an American socialite whose third husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom and the Dominions, abdicated his throne to marry her.

Two years later, after Edward's accession as King, Wallis divorced her second husband and Edward proposed to her.

In 1920 Edward, the Prince of Wales, visited San Diego, but he and Wallis did not meet.

After George's death in 1936, her eldest son Edward became King-Emperor, but to her dismay he abdicated the same year in order to marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson.
