Alexandre Gustave Eiffel ( ) ( 15 December 1832 – 27 December 1923 ) was a French civil engineer and architect.

Gustave Eiffel was born in Dijon, in the Côte-d ' Or department of France, the first child of Alexandre and Catherine Eiffel.

Although the family always used the name Eiffel, Gustave's name was registered at birth as Bönickhausen, and was not formally changed to Eiffel until 1880.

The business was successful enough for Catherine Eiffel to sell the business in 1843 and retire on the proceeds.

Eiffel was not a studious child, and thought his classes at the Lycée Royal in Dijon boring and a waste of time, although in his last two years, influenced by his teachers for history and literature, he began to study seriously, so that he managed to gain his baccalauréats in humanities and science.

Eiffel had hoped to enter the École Polytechnique, but his tutors decided that his performance was not good enough, and instead he qualified for entry to the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris, which offered a rather more vocational training.

This was the year that Paris hosted the first World's Fair, and Eiffel was bought a season ticket by his mother

Some of Nepveu's businesses were then acquired by the Compagnie Belge de Matériels de Chemin de Fer: Nepveu was appointed the managing director of the two factories in Paris, and offered Eiffel a job as head of the research department.

Eiffel was initially given the responsibility of assembling the metalwork and eventually took over the management of the entire project from Nepvau, who resigned in March 1860.

Following the completion of the project on schedule Eiffel was appointed as the principal engineer of the Compagnie Belge.

The price quoted by Eiffel was FF. 965, 000, far below the nearest competitor and so he was given the job, although since his company was less experienced than his rivals the Portuguese authorities appointed a committee to report on Eiffel et Cie's suitability.

In 1909 Theodor Wulf developed an electrometer, a device to measure the rate of ion production inside a hermetically sealed container, and used it to show higher levels of radiation at the top of the Eiffel Tower than at its base.

Among his other achievements, Cailletet installed a 300-m / 985-ft high manometer on the Eiffel Tower ; conducted an investigation of air resistance on falling bodies ; made a study of a liquid-oxygen breathing apparatus for high-altitude ascents ; and developed numerous devices, including automatic cameras, an altimeter, and air-sample collectors for sounding-balloon studies of the upper atmosphere.

When she fired Zane, Bernice developed a very rebellious attitude toward her, which led to Eiffel increasing her harassing efforts to intimidate her, until Borderline CEO Jim Hernandez, who knew Zane very well, arranged to transfer Eiffel to the new bookstore in Tokyo, Japan.

In Robert's Eiffel Town Series, the subject is portrayed as if seen from several viewpoints at once ; employing the concept of ' mobile perspective ' developed by his close friend Metzinger.

An Eiffel compiler was also developed using Slice.

The method was developed 1989-93 by Jean-Marc Nerson and Kim Waldén as a means of extending the higher-level concepts of the Eiffel programming language.

Eiffel is an ISO-standardized, object-oriented programming language designed by Bertrand Meyer ( an object-orientation proponent and author of Object-Oriented Software Construction ) and Eiffel Software.

Many concepts initially introduced by Eiffel later found their way into Java, C #, and other languages.

While Eiffel does not allow direct access to the features of a class by a client of the class, it does allow for the definition of an " assigner command ", such as:

Eiffel went on to attend the Collège Sainte-Barbe in Paris, in order to prepare for the difficult entrance exams set by the most important engineering colleges in France.

Eiffel Software, " The Eiffel Compiler " tecomp and Eiffel-library-developer Gobo have committed to implementing the standard ; Eiffel Software's EiffelStudio 6. 1 and " The Eiffel Compiler " tecomp implement some of the major new mechanisms — in particular, inline agents, assigner commands, bracket notation, non-conforming inheritance, and attached types.

" Design by Contract " is a registered trademark of Eiffel Software in the United States, and should not be confused with the general design approach.

The term was coined by Bertrand Meyer in connection with his design of the Eiffel programming language and first described in various articles starting in 1986 and the two successive editions ( 1988, 1997 ) of his book Object-Oriented Software Construction.

Eiffel Software applied for trademark registration for Design by Contract in December 2003, and it was granted in December 2004.

The current owner of this trademark is Eiffel Software.
