The International Society of Electrochemistry ( ISE ) is a global scientific society founded in 1949.

Among wide ranging contributions to physical chemistry Bockris is best known for his creation of Physical Electrochemistry, taking an old and decayed subject into modern times ( 1950 to 1970 ); for the introduction of a Hydrogen Economy ( 1971 to Present ); and for the first known nuclear reactions to be carried out in aqueous solutions ( 1989 to 1997 ).

Apart from Physical Electrochemistry, Bockris ’ name is well known in two other fields.

Bernhardt Patrick John O ’ Mara Bockris, ( born January 5, 1923, in Johannesburg, South Africa ), now retired, has had a successful and much decorated career as a Professor and Distinguished Professor in the physical sciences, chiefly Electrochemistry.

Yoshimoto attended Tashima Elementary School in the Kyobashi Ward of Tokyo, Yonezawa Engineering School ( Now Yamagata University ), and graduated in 1947 from the Engineering Division of Tokyo Institute of Technology with an a degree in Electrochemistry.

A year later, in 1949, the International Society of Electrochemistry ( ISE ) was founded.

He also served as editor of the Journal of Electrochemistry and as president of the Electrochemical Society.

After the war, he became head of administration in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin, but in 1948 he was dismissed from this position due to political pressure from the American authorities in West Berlin.

From 1978-85. he was Chairman of the Department of Electrochemical Physics of the International Society of Electrochemistry ( ISE ).

He was a member of the Editorial Board of the international Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and Interfacial Electrochemistry and the Editorial Board of the Russian journal Elektrokhimia.

Bockris was fortunate in being able to finish the research for his thesis, “ Electrochemistry of Non-aqueous Solutions ,” in only two years and he applied to Dr. Ellingham who granted his request thereafter.
