Elmyr de Hory ( born Hoffmann Elemér ) ( 1905 – December 11, 1976 ) was a Hungarian-born painter and art forger who claimed to have sold over a thousand forgeries to reputable art galleries all over the world.

Hergé was inspired by the Fernand Legros and Elmyr de Hory affair, and incorporated a second element, a new age sect and a phoney guru.

Far from serving as a traditional documentary on Elmyr de Hory, the film also incorporates Welles's companion Oja Kodar, notorious " hoax-biographer " Clifford Irving, and Orson Welles himself, in an autobiographical role.

For the movie Welles intercut footage of Elmyr de Hory, an art forger, and Clifford Irving, who wrote an " authorized " autobiography of Howard Hughes that had been revealed to be a hoax.

Forgeries painted by the late Elmyr de Hory, featured in the film F for Fake directed by Orson Welles, have become so valuable that forged de Horys have appeared on the market.

Elmyr moved to Budapest, Hungary to study.

Some of de Hory's many pseudonyms included Louis Cassou, Joseph Dory, Joseph Dory-Boutin, Elmyr Herzog, Elmyr Hoffman and E. Raynal.

Elmyr continued to elude the police for some time, but, tired of life in exile, decided to move back to Ibiza to accept his fate.
