Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius ( born Rudolf Gottlieb ; 2 January 1822 – 24 August 1888 ), was a German physicist and mathematician and is considered one of the central founders of the science of thermodynamics.

The eldest, Gottlieb Emanuel, attained to some distinction as a botanist and as a writer on Swiss historical bibliography ( 1785 – 1788, 7 vols ).

His son Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller ( 1735 – 1786 ), compiled a useful bibliography of writings relating to Swiss history, which is still used today.
