Li Yuan ( later to become Emperor Gaozu of Tang, r. 618 – 626 ) was the Duke of Tang and former governor of Taiyuan when other government officials were fighting off bandit leaders in the collapse of the Sui Empire, caused in part by a failed Korean campaign.
Meanwhile, in the North, aristocrat Li Yuan ( 李淵 ) held an uprising after which he ended up ascending the throne to become Emperor Gaozu of Tang.
It was founded by the rebel leader Liu Bang, known posthumously as Emperor Gaozu of Han.
Liu Bang assumed the title " emperor " ( huangdi ) at the urging of his followers and is known posthumously as Emperor Gaozu ( r. 202 – 195 BCE ).
To placate his prominent commanders from the war with Chu, Emperor Gaozu enfeoffed some of them as kings.
Emperor Gaozu was troubled about the abundant Han-manufactured iron weapons traded to the Xiongnu along the northern borders, and he established a trade embargo against the group.
