' The young eunuch eventually became a trusted adviser of the Prince of Yan, and assisted the prince in his insurrection against his nephew the Jianwen Emperor.

Once Zhu Di deposed Jianwen and became crowned as Yongle Emperor ( r. 1403-1424 ), Zheng He continued serving in his court as a Eunuch Grand Director ( 太監, tàijiàn ).

Emperor Jianwen is either lost or killed and Zhu Di is crowned as Emperor Hongwu.

In a show of mystical prowess, Deshin Shekpa adds legitimacy to a questionable succession to the throne by Yongle, who had killed his nephew the Jianwen Emperor in the culmination of a civil war.

The Hongwu Emperor specified his grandson Zhu Yunwen as his successor, and he assumed the throne as the Jianwen Emperor ( 1398 – 1402 ) after Hongwu's death in 1398.

His grandson Zhu Yunwen, the son of the late Zhu Biao, was crowned as the Jianwen Emperor.

He ordered all records of the four-year-reign of Jianwen Emperor to be dated as year 32 through year 35 of the Hongwu Emperor, in order to establish himself as the legitimate successor of the Hongwu Emperor.

He posthumously demoted his late elder brother Zhu Biao as Crown Prince Yiwen, demoted two younger brothers of Jianwen Emperor to commoners and kept them under house arrest at Fengyang, presumably till their deaths ; also under house arrest there was Zhu Wengui, the 2-year-old son of Jianwen Emperor, who would only be released as long as 55 years later.

He killed most of the Jian Wen palace servants, tortured many Jianwen Emperor loyalists to death, killed or by other means badly treated their relatives.

In 1402, Zhu Di launched a coup d ' état and successfully deposed his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor.

During the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Jianwen respected Confucius and Mencius so much that he honored their families with generation poems.

The imperial court was displeased with the religious principles of Ambrose, however his aid was soon solicited by the Emperor.
