On 10 August 1993, Vikernes and Blackthorn traveled to Euronymous's apartment in Oslo, where Vikernes stabbed and killed Euronymous.

Mayhem bassist Jørn " Necrobutcher " Stubberud, disgusted by Euronymous's behavior towards Dead, left the band.

After Euronymous's funeral, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher worked on releasing the album.
